Sign design is used as a means strong enough to reduce problems likely to occur through communication between space and human and is effective in such various areas as approach to a vast space, regional development, city plan and environmental design. However, the understanding of general public regarding sign design still remains at a low level and its study is in an insufficient stage. Yet, along with the change of acknowledgement regarding the importance of environment, studies of sign design as an environmental element and of the relation between environment and sign design are being required. In this study, we chose folk custom signs for a clue, trying illuminating the value as an environmental design element. Since ages, the folk custom signs that have largely been connected to our life could ensure that they played a role of providing integrity and existence for a place by means of an expressive method of symbol. Such symbolic features cannot be stated ‘reasonable’ in consideration of utility. However, it is planning a stable combination of human being and environment, contributing to the reality of human life and has a capability of expressing the global view and the common spirit in the corresponding cultural area. This is a major characteristic and significance that the folk custom signs own. Throughout the history, a human being is not definitely pursuing only a reasonable utility. From the perspective of the contemporaries, the folk history characters don’t seem so efficient, yet we should not overlook the fact that the efficiency is considerably enormous from the point of view of spiritual value given to humans. With the help of characteristics likewise of folk history characters, I think we will be able to open up a new possibility of connecting environment and humans through the tradition.

サインデザインは、空間と人間のコミュニケーションを通じて起こり得る問題を軽減するための強力な手段として使われており、広大な空間に対するアプローチ、地域開発、都市計画、環境デザインなどの諸分野で有効なものとして認められている。しかし、サインデザインに対する一般大衆の理解はいまだに低い水準に留まっている状況であり、その研究も不備な段階である。そのなかで最近の環境の重要性に対する認識の変化は環境とサインデザインとの関わりなどの研究が必要とされている。本稿では、その手係りとして民俗サイン物を取り上げ、環境デザインの要素としてその価値を再照明することを試みた。昔から私たちの生活と大きく密着してきた民俗サイン物は、象徴の表現方法を通してある場所に固有性と実存性を与える機能を果たしてきたことが確認できた。そのような象徴的な特性は、必ず効用性の側面において合理的であるとはいえない。しかし、人間と環境との安定された結合をはかり、人間生活の実際に寄与し、その文化圏の世界観と共同精神を表明する機能を持っている。これは民俗サイン物が持つ大きな特徴であり意義であるといえる。歴史を通じてみると、人間は決して合理的な効用性だけを追求してきたわけではない。現在我々の視点からみるとき、民俗サイン物は決して効率的とはいえないが、人間に与える精神的な効用性は認めなければならない。深い心理的作用としての特性、そして伝統を通じ環境と人間を結ぶ手掛かりとしての民俗サイン物が新たな可能性として考えられる。
