This article aims at introducing some explanations on the death rituals or funerals from the anthropological perspective. Some anthropologists like Hertz, van Gennep, and Turner are likely to understand death as the transitional processes from the living world to the world of the dead. In particular, Hertz has emphasized that dying is a slow process of transition from one spiritual state to another. This study also argues that the themes of rebirth, love, sexuality, and fertility as symbols transcending death have been explored by many anthropologists. The combination of themes of death and sexuality or fertility is considered to confront death with emphasis on life. In the Korean society, the themes of both sexuality and death could be found in the liminal period of death rituals around some southern part of islands. This paper concentrates on the importance of symbolism highlighted in the liminal period of funeral rituals. For instance, the liminality of death rituals is highly likely to link the symbolisms of transition, reversal, ambiguous conditions, seclusion, sexuality, and some others.

이 글은 일부 인류학자들이 죽음의 현상과 의례를 이해하는 시각을 보여주고자 한 것이다. 헤르쯔, 반 게넵, 터너는 죽음을 삶의 세계로부터 죽은 자의 세계로의 전이 과정으로 이해하고 있다. 특히 헤르쯔는 죽는다는 것이 영적인 한 상태에서 영적인 다른 상태로 느리게 전이되는 과정임을 강조하고 있다. 인류학자들은 죽음이 삶과 밀접히 연결되어 있음을 강조하여 왔다. 많은 사회의 죽음의례가 강조하고 있는 것은 죽음에도 불구하고 생이 대대로 이어진다는 점이다. 따라서 장례의례 가운데 특히 전이적 과정에서 지배적으로 등장하는 상징들은 성적욕망과 생산성에 관련된다. 한국의 도서지방을 중심으로 ‘다시래기’와 ‘산다위’와 같은 장례에 관련된 놀이들에서 죽음의 현장에서 성을 노래하고 성적 행위를 하는 것은 생명 현상의 하나로 이해될 수 있다. 이 글은 특히 장례의례의 리미날 기간에 강조되는 상징들이 전이, 역전, 애매모호한 상태, 고립, 성적욕망 등과 관련됨에 주목하고 있다.
