This study is on preaching written by missionaries. The preaching ofearly protestant missionaries who shared gospel with us have dominat-ed Korean Church. Those standing on the speakers’platform also tookthe examples by missionaries on the areas from understanding preach-ing, contents of sermons, the bible text and form to the delivery of themessages and the formula had taken shape under their teaching.Accordingly, looking into the sermons of the early missionaries havesignificance to find out how they were handed down and impacted on Koreanpreachers. No clear denominational division is shown in the missionar-ies’preaching. They have very evangelical points of view. Even thougheach denomination has different emphasis, it is common that theologyitself is evangelical. All Protestant missionaries commonly had takenpuritanical strictness as high priority on the emphasis of faith. it also requiresthe Christians to live with distinguished life style in the areas of ethicand morality. It is hard to find the preaching which dealt with topicsrelated to societies and nations. The reason for this is that the overalltheology of Korean Church has a conservative viewpoint that religion shouldbe separated from politics under the influence of the missionaries. Themissionaries had used three point preaching as the form and rhetoric inoverall. The serious problems found in the preaching of the missionar-ies are unbalanced and unfaithful to preach the whole Bible.

이 논문은 선교사의 설교를 연구한 것이다. 우리에게 복음을 전해준 기독교 초기 선교사의 설교는 오늘날 까지도 한국교회를 지배하고 있다. 한국의 강단 역시 설교에 대한 이해나, 설교내용, 성경본문, 설교형식과 전달에 이르기까지 선교사의 모범을 따랐고 그들의 지도 아래 그 틀이 형성되었다. 따라서 선교사의 설교를 살펴보는 것은 한국 설교자에게 어떻게 전수되고 영향을 끼쳤는가를 알아보는데 중요한 의미를 갖는다. 선교사의 설교에서 보여 지는 것은 신학적으로 거의 구분이 없고 매우 복음적인 노선을 지향하고 있다. 비록 각 교파마다 강조하는 면이 다르지만 신학은 기독교 복음주의적 공통점을 보이고 있다. 기독교 선교사는 신앙적인 강조에서 공통적으로 청교도적 엄격성을 강조했지만 선교사 설교 가운데 사회적 국가적 주제를 다룬 설교는 거의 찾아볼 수 없다. 이는 한국교회의 신학 전반이 선교사로부터 기인한 정교분리의 보수적 성격을 견지하고 있음을 볼 수 있다. 선교사의 설교형식이나 수사학적 치장은 전체적으로 주로 연역적 대지설교 방식을 사용하였고 설교 속에 나타난 심각한 문제는 성경의 편견성을 들 수 있다.
