This study paralleled, contrasted, compared heroic fasting women saints in the Middle Ages with today’s anorexic girls. By doing these, the writer tries to demonstrate the patriarchal structure in the religious and popular culture. As a matter of fact, there are several commonalities between religious fasting and anorexia: sharing similar symptoms, closely connecting with gender, tieing with specific time and era.Beneath heroic fasting and anorexia, the infrastructure is characterized by the followings. First of all, heroic fasting and anorexia relate to the ideology of chastity of women. Second, fasting and anorexia are by-products of women’s adaptation themselves to the ideal model of woman which was required by patriarchal Christianity and commercial capitalism. Nevertheless, thirdly, these two phenomena imply a type of resistance or subversion against existing established structures. Lastly, both heroic fasting and anorexia functioned as an apparatus by which oppressed women obtained counter-pleasure by self-torturing or self-control.

본 논문은 경이적인 금식을 하는 중세의 성녀와 거식증에 걸린 현대의 여성들을 비교하면서 가부장적 문화와 억압적인 사회구조를 드러내려고 시도하였다. 금식과 거식은 매우 유사한 이웃항(terms)들을 갖고 있다. 두 현상은 일정시대에 두드러지게 나타나는 유행성 현상이라는 점, 젠더와 매우 밀접한 관계를 갖고 있다는 점, 매우 유사한 증상들을 공유한다는 점에서 매우 유사하다. 금식과 거식을 현상으로 드러내는 하부구조는 우선 여성의 순결이 숭배되는 문화이다. 여성의 성과 성욕을 소거해왔던 중세는 성욕을 느끼는 여성들을 탐욕스럽고 비정상적인 존재로 전락하였고 이것이 바로 여성들에게 내면화된 자신들의 이미지였다. 따라서 육체를 제압하려는 열망으로 드러났다. 두 번째, 현대의 거식증과 중세의 금식은 상업자본과 가부장적 기독교가 요청하는 이상적 여성상에 자신들을 순응시키려는 노력으로 나타났다. 매혹적인 몸매를 자랑하는 깡마른 모델이 현대의 이상형이라면 중세의 이상형은 육체를 제압하고 자기고문을 통해 육체성을 극복한 여성들이었다. 세 번째, 그럼에도 불구하고 거식증과 금식은 일종의 저항을 함축하고 있다. 먹기를 거부함으로써 거식증은 몸 숭배 소비주의에 항거하고 금식은 단조로운 삶을 숙명으로 받아들일 수밖에 없는 여성들이 영웅적 금식을 통해 교권에 도전하는 일종의 항거였다. 마지막으로 금식과 거식은 육체에 머물러 있는 여성들의 자기통제를 통한 희열을 담지하고 있다.금식이나 거식은 여성이 정치사회적으로 자신의 역할을 재조정하거나 자기 목소리를 낼 시기에 등장했다. 따라서 금식이나 거식증은 권력관계를 잘 반영하고 있는 현상이며 그 권력관계는 가부장적 사회－문화 구조라 아니할 수 없다.
