This paper aims to examine Maimonides’ account of religious language. According to Jewish tradition, God is absolutely simple and entirely different from creatures. How can language about the finite realm refer to God? What do we do with statements like “God is powerful”, “God is wise”? Maimonides’ claim is that since neither essential nor accidental attributes pertain to God because of His absolute simplicity, any kind of positive attribute cannot be truthfully predicated of God. He tries to make his point more specific through a detailed examination of five kinds of predicate. Actions are the only predications that he accepts as licit, but only when interpreted narrowly as referring, not to God himself, but to the effects of his actions. Having ruled out all positive attributes applying to God except for action-predicates, Maimonides holds that the terms such as ‘knowledge’, ‘power’, ‘will’, ‘life’ are predicated equivocally of God and creatures. He is left with the via negativa, which involves more than a single sweeping negation of all predicates of God. Thus to say that “God is powerful” means “God does not lack power or possess it in a way comparable to us.” Maimonides’ negative theology is not wholly devoid of content, but rather it helps to form proper religious belief by conducting the mind toward the utmost reach man may attain in the apprehension of God. Of course, he recognizes that there is almost no epistemic distinction between positive and negative statements about God. If that is the case, why does he uphold the via negativa? It is my contention that he prefers negation to affirmation since the latter poses far more serious threats to the believer than do the former.
