Alasdair MacIntyre accuses liberal individualism of being the cause of moral incommensurability. Modern self, according to him, portrays himself as the independent rational judge who can be separated from the particular social, historical, and cultural context. The claim that moral self is neutral and impartial makes moral discussion be difficult. This paper aims to introduce and analyze MacIntyre's criticism of liberal individualism. First, it will present the dominance of emotivism as the cause of absence of objective moral criterion in the personal domain. Second, it will analyze the interrelationship between market economy, appearance of modern state, and dissolution of social identity in the public domain. Third, it will explore how the conflation of emotivism, market economy, and the appearance of modern state result in the diminution of practical rationality of responsible moral agent. This paper will claim that the exercise of practical rationality presupposes self-acknowledgement of rational agency in the personal domain and the search for the good in the social domain. The paper concludes that both the search for the rational agency and social identity in the individual depends on the understanding of the particular social historical and cultural context.
