There are numerous stories about mythical creatures which are equivalent to our Dokkaebi; these stories exist everywhere in the world, and they are rich in both diversity and quantity. They are diverse and unique in their contents and images, just as the countries differ in their cultures. Most of those stories appear in children's picture books. Without exception, various Dokkaebi picture books have been published in Korea. For the children, Dokkaebi is not a mere monster, but a special creature that can give powerful imagination, slight fear, moral lessons and endless dream. This study looks at the Korean Dokkaebi, and its contextual background as the followings: A. The origin of Monster -a type of monster- as an equivalent of Dokkaebi in China and Japan. B. The similarity and difference between the images of Dokkaebi represented in visual materials aimed at children, through detailed comparative studies. Based on the analysis stated above, the researcher aims at contributing to build the right image of Dokkaebi that recently has been a controversial topic. The term "Dokkaebi" only exists in Korea; however many anthropologists and folklorists have interpreted the 'Monster' in China and Japan as the counterpart of the Korean "Dokkaebi". Therefore, following their examples, the researcher shall perceive Dokkaebi as equal to the Chinese and Japanese 'Monster'. By opening a discussion about exploring and establishing right images of Dokkaebi, which is one of our cultural idiosyncrasies, the researcher hopes Dokkaebi to be practically applied as an interesting content filled with dream and moral lessons to the children, and also to contribute to revitalize discussions about how to build the right image of Dokkaebi.

세계 각국에는 우리의 도깨비와 비슷한 존재에 대한 이야기가 다양하게 전해온다. 그 내용과 이미지를 보면 각국의 문화차이만큼이나 다양하고 독특하다. 대개 어린이 그림책에 많이 등장하고 있다. 우리나라도 예외는 아니어서 다양한 도깨비 그림책이 출판되고 있다. 도깨비는 어린이들에게 단순한 괴물이 아니고 재미있는 상상과 즐거운 두려움, 교훈과 꿈을 주는 존재이다. 본 연구는 한국의 도깨비 이야기와 그림책의 일러스트레이션에 관해서 살펴보며, 그에 상응하는 존재로서 중국과 일본에 전해오는 유사 괴물의 하나인 요괴의 기원, 속성을 고찰해 보는 한편, 주로 어린이 시각매체에 표현된 이미지를 비교 검토하여 유사성과 차이점을 분석함으로써 최근 논란이 되는 도깨비 이미지의 올바른 구축에 도움이 되고자 한다. 도깨비라는 명칭은 우리나라에만 존재하고 있으나 인문, 민속학계의 선행 연구에 따라 중국과 일본의 경우, 그에 상응하는 존재인 요괴를 같은 의미로 취급하고자 한다. 이 글을 통해 도깨비라는 우리 문화원형의 독특한 정형에 대한 올바른 탐색과 정립에 관한 논의를 제공하고, 어린이들에게 꿈과 교훈을 주는 재미있는 콘텐츠로 더욱 다양화되길 바라며 올바른 도깨비 이미지에 대한 관심과 활성화에 도움이 되기를 희망한다.
