The aim of this study was to obtain the basic data for the effective social studies for young children in the Kindergarten by investigating the perception of the Kindergarten teachers on the social studies. Three focus group interview of the teachers was adopted as investigation-method in the present study. The following results were obtained: 1) Social studies for young children should be designed based on the individual background such as their experience, age, and developing status. Successive and integrated internalization of social educational contents and familial connection were also found to be important factors for the more effective social studies for young children. 2) It was observed that many teachers understand the main contents of social studies for young children as sociality. The obtained results suggested that sociality and social scientific concept should be integrationally considered and applied for the effective social studies for young children, and the continuous education for the teachers on the effective way of social studies for young children should also be performed.

본 연구의 목적은 유아사회교육에 대한 유치원 교사들의 인식을 알아봄으로써 유치원에서 효과적으로 유아사회교육을 실시하기 위한 기초자료를 제공하는 것이다. 연구를 위해 유치원 교사를 대상으로 3개의 포커스 그룹 인터뷰를 실시하였으며, 인터뷰를 통해 내용을 분석하여 결과를 도출하였다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 교수-방법적 측면에서 교사들은 유아사회교육은 경험, 연령, 발달의 차이 등 개인의 차이를 고려하여 적용해야 하고, 지속적인 내면화, 생활주제의 장기적․통합적 접근, 가정과의 연계를 통해 사회교육을 실시해야 효과적이라고 인식하였다. 둘째, 내용 지식적 측면에서 교사들은 유아사회교육의 내용을 주로 사회성이라고 인식하고 있었으며, 사회성과 사회과학적 개념 중 사회성에 편중하여 강조하고 있었다. 반면 사회과학적 개념은 인식이 부족하고 어렵다는 생각 때문에 강조하지 않았으며, 관심가지기 정도의 교육이 적절하다고 인식하였다. 이런 결과를 중심으로 살펴볼 때 교수-방법적 측면은 유아교육 전문가로서 인식이 잘 나타났으나 내용 지식적 측면은 매우 부족한 것을 알 수 있었다. 따라서 효과적인 유아사회교육을 위해서는 교사들의 사회교육 내용 지식에 대한 탐구의 자세가 필요하고, 유아사회교육에 대한 장․단기 계획이 필요하며, 유아사회교육의 내용인 사회성과 사회과학적 개념의 통합적 접근이 필요하다. 더불어 교사들의 사회교육 내용 지식에 대한 이해를 도모하기 위해 지속적인 교사교육이 요구된다.
