A Study on the Lifelong Education to Acquire a Cultural Literacy for Women Marital Immigration

Women marital immigration who emigrated to Korea are living without a knowledge about Korean culture. They are at a disadvantage because they don't have a cultural literacy. Central and local governments and private organizations are trying to provide a lifelong education for women marital immigration. Most programs are consist of Korean language education for beginners, introduction of traditional culture, and some classes for hobby. However these programs are not sufficient to help them in acquiring cultural literacy. The purpose of this study is to analyze cultural education programs for women marital immigration recently, which comprise cultural art education program, a support enterprise for alienated classes through lifelong education, cultural education in Korean language education, then to build a means for acquisition a cultural literacy through lifelong education. The problems of these programs are as follows. First, these are based on a policy for assimilation with patriarchal society. Second, these programs has no consideration for cultural literacy gap between Korean and women marital immigration. They are treated as a object for assimilation, have a difficulty in living as a people who has a social subjecthood. To live as a active member of the Korean society, lifelong education has to be based on multiculturalism. In addition items about cultural literacy suited to Korean society have to study and use for cultural education.

1990년대 초부터 본격적으로 한국으로 이주하기 시작한 여성결혼이민자들은 대부분 한국문화에 대한 이해 없이 한국생활을 시작한다. 문화에 대한 배경 지식이라고 할 수 있는 문화 리터러시를 습득하지 못한 이들은 여러 가지 불리한 조건과 환경 속에 놓여 있다. 이들을 지원하기 위해 정부, 지자체, 민간단체들이 교육을 실시하고 있는데, 형식적인 면에서는 학교교육의 틀을 벗어나며 그 대상이 성인이고, 계속교육이라는 점에서 시간과 공간을 아우르는 평생교육의 관점에서 바라보아야 한다. 내용과 방법 면에 있어서도 사회적인 일상적 삶의 장면에서 자연스럽게 이루어지는 다양한 양태의 평생교육을 필요로 한다. 그런데, 이들 교육은 대부분 초급 한국어 교육, 단순 문화체험, 취미 수준에 머물러, 문화 리터러시 습득에 큰 도움을 주지 못하고 있다. 따라서 본 연구는 여성결혼이민자 대상 교육 중 문화예술교육, 소외계층 평생교육 지원사업, 한국어 문화교육에 대한 분석과 그 한계에 대한 논의를 통해 여성결혼이민자들의 문화 리터러시 습득의 평생교육적 함의에 대해 논하고, 그 방안을 모색하고자 하였다. 연구 결과 여성결혼이민자들이 수동적 동화의 대상이 아닌, 주체적인 사회의 일원으로 한국사회에 적응하여 살기 위해서는 다문화주의의 바탕 위에서, 시간과 공간이 통합된 평생교육이 이루어져야 하며, 또한 문화 리터러시 습득을 위한 구체적 항목을 분류, 개발하여 문화교육에 활용해야 할 것이다.
