A Missiological Study on the Life of Calvin Sung Hyun Kim The question of the Reformation and mission is one of the puzzling riddles of Christian mission history. Until now, the Reformers were criticised that they focused on the reformation of the church and didn’t missionary works for the world. However, the life of Calvin tells us about the contrary facts. He became lay evangelist before reformer and missionary before systematic theologian. As a pastor of the church, he focused to reform the church and all the city of Strasbourg and Geneva from 1536 to 1555, and did missionary works in France, the whole Europe, and Brazil from 1555 to 1564. In around 1528, Calvin experienced, by the providential grace of God, ‘a conversion’ at Bourges. His conversion was not a simple change from catholic to protestant, but a spiritual regeneration. From that time, he focused on the evangelism despite the persecution for about 7 years. In 1536, he wrote the first Christian Institution in Basel for the salvation of all European who eager the Gospel. At the same year, Calvin was called to do missionary works in Geneva by God through Farel, like Jonas, and get involved in the reformation of Geneva. However, he was expelled because of the conflicts with the parliament of Geneva. After 3 years in Strasbourg, in 1541 he was once again called to Geneva by God through the parliament of Geneva. In Geneva, he battled for the reform of the church and the city of Geneva to make them governed by the Word of God. In 1555, Calvin gained the church’s independence from the civil government of Geneva and reformed the whole city. From this year, Calvin started to concentrate on the world mission. From 1555 to 1562, he sent 88 missionaries to France responding to the demand of the churches in France. At the same period, 2,150 churches were established according to the model of the church of Geneva. The number of protestant developed rapidly to 3 million members in a population of 20 million in 7years. In 1556, he sent a mission band including 14 missionaries to Brazil. The semiraculous mission enterprises were carried out under the fatal persecution. Calvin, according to the Bible, considered the Great Commission of Jesus as 2 commissions, ‘propagation of Gospel’(Mt. 28.19-20) and ‘administration of the sacraments’(Lk. 22.19-20). So he adopted these 2 commissions as 2 marks in the genuine church. Calvin affirmed that the final commission of Jesus in Mathew 28.19-20 is not limited just to the age of the apostles, but continues until the final days of the world. He considered this order as the prime order of the church and he passionately engaged himself in the Christian mission work. On the contrary, he criticised the ministers of the roman church, who called themselves successors of the apostles but were indifferent to the spreading of the Gospel, as pseudo-pastors who abused the title of the apostles. In 1536, Calvin wrote the first Christian Institution in Basel. This Institution wasn’t a systematic theological book but a book of evangelism including his evangelical confession of faith. His intention was to teach the principal doctrine of salvation to the intellectuals in the entire Europe. The content was filled with the core of the Gospel for the human salvation and a manual of teaching the Bible. In case of the final edition of the Institution, considering the order of this book, God the Father, God the Son, God the Spirit, the church and the state, we can see that the structure of this book is the mission of the triune God. He expressed that the triune God uses the church and the state as an instrument of mission. The monastic movement in the Middle-Age was a reforming movement to renew the corrupted church. It had not a mission intention. However, the reform and the renewal character of the monastic movement eventually produced the Christian mission. The reformation of the sixteenth century was a reform and a renewal movement. At the beginning, it was a reform and a renewal movement. But then, it naturally resulted in the Christian mission to the world. For Calvin, he concentrated the reform of the Geneva Church and the state from 1536 to 1555. After that time, he did missionary works in France, in the whole Europe, and Brazil for 10 years until 1564. The revival movement through the spiritual reform is characterised by the world mission. For Calvin, Christian Mission is the salvation activities of the triune God for the extension of the kingdom of God through out theearth by propagating the Gospel. So his conception of mission has 4 elements; missio Dei, Propagating the Gospel, the earth, and the kingdom of God. 1) The subject of the mission is God: missio Dei. God’s mission including the human’s responsibility: the enthusiasm of God and the passion of the man. 2) The only way of expansion of the kingdomofGodispropagatingthewholeGospel. 3) The target of the mission is not just overseas lands but every single part of the world where the Gospel is not yet introduced. 4) The purpose of the mission is the expansion of the kingdom of God through the expansion of the church. By this study, we acknowledge that Calvin’s life and theology are missionary. Although Calvin focused on the reform of the church, the world mission happened through this reformation. Caught by the sovereignty of God, Calvin was converted by the Gospel and became a lay evangelist because of the compassion for the lost. He sacrificed his life for the reform of the church and the society, and for the expansion of the kingdom of God in which the will of God reigns. Therefore, he started as a lay evangelist and became a missionary reformer dreaming about the evangelisation of the world. Calvin’s mission paradigm gives us a model of Reformation mission which is: a continuing reform of the church that leads to World Mission. Soli Deo Gloria!

Soli Deo Gloria!
