A Study on the Comparison between the Picture Books of 'Anthony Browne' and 'David Wisner'

This study was designed to research the similarities and differences between two well-known authors, Anthony Browne and David Wisner through several approaches, such as literary and artistic merits and text-oriented semantic structure, on their own lifetime and philosophy, and to introduce the efficient method of teaching the overt or covert meaning shown in their books to kindergarten teachers as well as adults.For such purpose, I selected and examined 13 and 7 picture books, written by Anthony Browne and David Wisner respectively, which have been published in Korean. To analyze the literary merit on their picture books, I focused on the main elements such as theme, character, plot, and style suggested by Rusell, including the artistic elements, artistic media, and artistic styles. Also, I analyzed the semantic structure of their texts based on such four factors of semiology as syntagm, paradigm, actants and myth.The findings are as follow: First, they both create the characters, plain plots and themes similar to infants' daily life for children to enjoy reading their books, using the literary and artistic elements. Second, their skilful use of color, pattern and background detail subtly conveys a sense of empathy for children; Anthony Browne provides the clues of story or the psychological description of his creatures through forms and colors while David Wisner creates the images of fantasy and illusion by using the dark-colors, which are not bright and transparent - rarely shown in other picture-books. Third, their children's illustrations, showing various genres and intertextuality in common, make children come to learn numerous art works including literature.Fourth, they try to convey the traits and tasks of children, the value of their family, the rules of their society via the myth illustrated in their books. Anthony Browne and David Wisner attempt to show the children their current environment by handling their daily life and adventures, and help them not only understand their own traits and developmental tasks as well as the importance of family, the relationship with family members, and the role distribution, but also play a role as a social member by internalizing the social rules.

본 연구의 목적은 국내에 널리 알려진 Anthony Browne과 David Wisner의 그림책을 문학성, 예술성, 텍스트 의미 구조 접근에서 분석하여 두 작가의 그림책이 어떠한 공통점과 차이점을 보이는지를 살펴보아 유아에게 그림책을 제공하는 교사를 비롯한 성인들이 그림책 속 외시의미와 더불어 함축의미를 유아에게 효율적으로 제시할 수 있도록 함에 있다. 이를 위해 Anthony Browne의 그림책 13편과 David Wisner의 그림책 7편을 선정하여 분석한 결과 두 작가의 그림책은 문학성, 예술성, 텍스트 의미 구조 접근에서 많은 공통점과 차이점을 보였으며 특히, 텍스트 의미 구조 접근 중 신화분석에서 Anthony Browne의 그림책은 가족과 사회의 범주에 해당하는 신화를 다수 포함하고 있었고, David Wisner의 그림책은 대부분 유아의 범주에 해당하는 신화를 내포하고 있는 것으로 나타났다.
