The purpose of this paper is to analyze the outbound tourism pattern of Korea using a gravity model. The GDP and the distance are known to play the principal role in the gravity model, but this study employes the trading volume and the inter-country distance. This paper shows that the outbound tourists have a negative correlation with distance and exchange rate, while they have a positive one with bilateral trading volume. The panel estimation is done using a pooled regression where time series and cross-sectional observations are combined or pooled together. The panel data are composed of 12 countries and 5 years. The results of the gravity model show that the trading volume and distance are significant, but the exchange rate is insignificant. Then, the gravity model is reestimated with nine countries excluding Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam, showing that all the variables are significant and have the expected signs. It indicates that as the bilateral trading volume increases, so do the outbound tourists. Furthermore, the rolling regressions illustrate that the influence of distance and trading volume gets stronger, while the coefficients of the exchange rate get smaller.

우리나라 사람들의 해외관광은 크게 증가하여 최근 5년 동안 우리나라 사람 1인당 한 번씩 해외여행을 다녀온 정도이다. 그런데 우리나라 사람들의 해외여행선호 국가도 빠르게 변하고 있으며, 이러한 질적 변화는 환율, 물가, 소득과 같은 시계열 변수만을 이용하는 기존의 모형으로 설명할 수 없다. 이에 본고는 중력모형을 이용하여 한국의 해외관광패턴의 변화를 밝힌다. 먼저 12개국 패널자료를 중력모형을 이용하여 추정하되, 환율변동에 개입하는 말레이시아, 인도네시아, 베트남 3개국에 환율더미를 부여한 결과 교역량이 해외여행에 가장 큰영향을 미치고 국가간 거리와 환율이 그 뒤를 따름을 보인다. 또한 근거리 더미와 원거리 더미를 투입하여 근거리 국가의 양의 효과가 원거리 국가의 음의 효과보다 커서 거리의 순효과가 양의 효과를 갖는다는 것을 보인다. 또한 시간이 흐름에 따라 국가간 거리와 교역량의 영향력은 강해지는데 비해 환율의 영향력은 약해지고 있다는 것과 국가간 교역의 증가가 관광을 활성화시키는 요인임을 밝힌다.
