My work represents an ongoing journey of aesthetic and technical discovery. Through the use of ceramic materials such as glaze and casting slip, I explore the endless array of colors and textures that are manifest in them. This kind of exploration in the ceramic medium, for both ceramic scientists and ceramic artists, is centered on three major elements: Alumina, Silica, and Fluxes. The addition of oxides and ceramic stains, combined with the extreme physical and chemical changes these materials undergo in the making process means that the final outcome is not always predictable; thus for me, there is a relinquishing of control on my part throughout the many stages of the art making process. My work, in essence, explores the interaction of these elements and the resulting colors, textures, and emotional responses they produce. The surfaces of my work serve as a record and medium for contemplation about this journey and the many explorations and investigations I have taken along it. This paper will also describe some of the slip casting techniques I used to achieve the soft contemplative form of my work, as well as describing the glazes I developed to unite with the surface with the form.

본 연구는 도예작품에 있어서 유약의 다양한 색감과 질감을 타일의 형태를 통해 표현한 정적이고, 균형적이고, 과도한 장식적 요소를 배제한 절제미가 담긴 나의 작품에 관한 것이다. 도자 색안료의 발색정도, 유약이 갖고 있는 세 가지 주요 요소와 유약계산 방식을 응용해서 찾아가는 유약표면의 다양한 질감, 소성방식과 온도 차이에서 일어날 수 있는 요변 그리고, 유약과 빛이 반응하는 효과를 동시적으로 고려하면서 작품제작이 이루어졌다. 색과 질감을 표현하는데 있어서 1250˚C의 소성온도와 24시간 이상의 소성시간 이라는 물리적 특수성을 거쳐서 발현된 이 유약들은 예상과는 다른 소성결과를 낳기도 하지만, 이것 또한 내가 조율할 수 있는 범주로 넣기 위해서 노력하고 있다. 이 유약을 이용한 표면장식은 되도록 심플하고 절제된 형태위에서 표현되고 있다. 이러한 일련의 과정을 통해서 표현된 표면장식이 내가 추구하고자 하는 감성들과 어우러져 보는 사람들에게 미적인 감흥이 제공되기를 희망한다. 나는 유약으로 표현되어 질 수 있는 효과들이 나의 미적, 시각적, 촉각적 감정을 불러일으킴 으로써 하나의 명상적 순간을 제공하도록 유도하고 있다. 유약의 특성을 이용해서 작업하려는 나의 시도는 유약과 슬립에 대한 감각적인 연출에 대한 관심으로 자연스럽게 연결되어졌다. 이러한 유약의 장식적 표현은 내가 원하는 그 색과 질감을 얻기 위해 끊임없는 실험을 통해서 나타나고 있다. 본 연구에서 본인이 이번 작업을 통해서 사용했던 30여 종의 기본유약과 안료 및 산화물을 이용한 유약 데이트 중 몇 가지를 소개했다. 이장용 슬립과 석고의 특성을 이용해서 부드럽고 자연스러운 형태를 가능하게 했던 성형방법도 같이 소개하고 있다. 이 부드러운 표면위에 반영된 깊이 있는 색감은 나의 작품에 무심코 응시하고 있는 이에게 미적 감정을 전달하는 언어의 역할을 하기를 바란다.
