All political doctrines assume a view of human nature. This paper aims to examine the relationship between conservatism and human nature and its implications in politics by sketching out the reading of human nature that lends itself most distinctively to conservative ends. Conservatism is better able to handle the universality that the concept of human nature implies. Much less a political view of society and humanity, conservatism gains its form and strength from an account of naturalness. What naturally happens to all humans is acculturation within a continuing social milieu. In the discussion of the themes of universality, acculturation and continuity, this paper tries to show how the conservative approach makes the connection between the fixed datum of social experience and the necessary features of the nature of humankind. As a result, it is argued that the intersections between politics, human nature and conservatism are to be found in the identification of authentic social change with continuity.

모든 정치이념이나 사상은 인간본성에 관한 하나의 관점을 전제하고 있다. 본 연구는 보수주의의 목적에 가장 적절하게 부합된다고 생각되는 인간본성에 대한 개략적인 견해의 제시를 통해 보수주의와 인간본성 간의 관계, 그리고 이것이 넓은 의미에서 정치에 대해 가지는 함의를 고찰하는 데 목적이 있다. 보수주의는 인간의 속성과 사회에 대한 정치적 견해라기보다는 보다 직접적으로 인간본성에 관한 하나의 이론이라 할 수 있다. 보수주의에 의하면 인간은 자기구성의 문화적 완성을 필요로 하며, 이것은 일상적인 것, 일반적인 것, 자연적인 것을 명확히 규정짓는 것이다. 따라서 보수주의는 개인이 인간본성의 보수성을 명확히 표출하지 않을지라도 그 행동이 인간본성의 보수적 성향을 드러낸다는 주장을 분명히 하는 이론이다. 이러한 인식을 바탕으로 본 연구는 인간본성의 보편성, 문화적 적응 그리고 연속성에 대한 논의를 통해 보수주의적 접근이 사회적 경험이라는 고정된 여건과 인간본성의 필수적인 특징들 간을 어떻게 연결하는가를 보여주고자 한다. 그리하여 본 연구는 정치, 인간본성 그리고 보수주의가 서로 만나는 곳은 진정한 사회변화와 연속성이 일체화되는 바로 그 지점이라는 것을 주장하고 있다.
