The current environmental problems and ecological crisis are not just simple issues limited to one society, but they are complicated global issues. To solve this ecological crisis, we should change the way we see nature itself and be aware of the necessity of teaching environmental ethics to our future generations Environmental ethics is the study of questions about the value between human beings and nature. By simply comparing the asian view of nature with that of western people view causes many problems. The greed western outlook on nature has destroyed nature and regarded nature as something to conquer. And it is a main cause of this environmental crisis that we face. The asian philosophy of environment and Lao-tzu's are suggested as a solution to the environmental crisis. It also could be an alternative proposal for the change of consciousness to that matter. However, we still can find a solution to this problem in western philosophy, so it is important to figure out the similar aspects of these two different philosophies. By teaching environmental ethics in Korea, many teachers adapt the method of comparing the asian view of nature with that of the western view. Also, the textbooks for the middle and high school students are dealing with environmental pollution issues for the most part. And this has been perceived negatively. There have been two extreme teaching methods, one focusing on the theories about environmental ethics and the other giving students the chances to sympathize with nature by experiencing nature itself. In moral education, it is necessary to seek the compromise between- a theory based approach and an experiential approach. In moral education, the synthetic approach is a newly suggested approach. It is the combination of ethics education based on asian and western views on nature and teaching how to make moral deduction. This research study the philosophy of Spinoza and Lao-tzu's. They are believed to be very helpful to overcome the environmental crisis. As a part of moral study, environmental ethics education needs more programs helping the learners develop their imaginative power and understand the concept of " nature" by using their imagination. There is one environmental ethics education program that deals with the philosophy of Spinoza and Lao-tzu's, it is Marietta McCarty's education of "nature" in Little Big Minds. This program helps the students understand the concept of the "nature" and develop the imaginative power about the nature. At the same time, it includes the philosophy of Spinoza and Lao-tzu's. This research look into some of the characteristics and implications of Marita McCarthy's program. There are many environmental ethics programs based on Lao-tzu's view on nature but there are few based on Spinoza. Marietta McCarty's program is based on the philosophy of Spinoza and Lao-tzu's. However, the effectiveness of this teaching method and how to teach this program to the students, is not studied very much so this could be a very risky trial.

현대 문명의 급격한 발전이 낳은 인간의 의식 속에는 이분법적인 사고와 자연은 인간을 위해 존재한다는 서양의 인간 중심주의적 자연관이 자리 잡고 있다. 이로 인해 오늘날의 환경 문제가 야기되었다고 보고, 이를 극복하기 위해서 우리의 환경윤리교육은 대안으로 동양의 자연관을 제시하고 있다. 그러나 동양과 서양의 자연관을 단순 비교하는 이러한 환경윤리교육은 많은 문제점을 지니고 있다. 그 동안 도덕 교과에서 환경윤리 교육은 환경윤리 이론과 사상을 중심으로 가르치거나 직접 자연 속으로 들어가 체험을 함으로써 자연과 교감하게 가르치거나 하는, 양 극단의 방법이 주로 사용되었다. 그렇지만 이제는 동서양 자연관 모두를 포함한 도덕적 추론과 상상력을 함께 강조하는 통합적 접근이, 환경윤리교육에 필요하다. 노자와 스피노자는 자연을 목적론적 체계로 보는 것을 경계한다. 본 연구에서는 노자와 스피노자의 자연관을 함께 다룬 마리타 맥카티의 자연관 교육 프로그램을 살펴본다. 이 프로그램은 ‘자연’ 개념과 자연에 대한 상상력을 길러준다. 그리고 도덕적 추론 능력과 도덕적 상상력의 신장을 동시에 추구하고 있으므로, 우리의 환경윤리교육에 주는 시사점이 크다고 할 수 있다.
