Youth hostels which are used for sound youth education and international exchange have high demand as youth training facilities. Recently, they have become resting places where general travelers can spend time together with family, friends and coworkers, not limited to youth. Thus, youth hostels are increasingly common and developing, seeking new design concepts for space as well as the basic functions of accomodations and meals and the structure. These concepts are especially evident in foreign youth hostels around Europe and the design characteristics in foreign cases can be classified as the expressional characteristics of the structure, material, color and emotion of the space. The study is to broaden the understanding of the application of new designs of youth hostels and provide rich possibilities for the design of future accommodation facilities through the analyzed design characteristics.

건전한 청소년 교육 및 국제 교류의 장소로 활용되고 있는 유스호스텔은 청소년 수련시설로서 수요가 높게 나타나고 있다. 현대에 이르러서는 그 개념이 단지 청소년에게만 국한되지 않고 일반 여행자들에게도 가족, 친구, 동료와 함께 보낼 수 있는 휴식 장소로 자리매김 되고 있으며, 이처럼 보편화되는 유스호스텔은 숙식의 기본적인 기능이나 구조 못지않게 공간에 새로운 디자인 개념을 모색하면서 발전하고 있다. 이러한 개념들은 유럽을 중심으로 해외 유스호스텔에서 더욱 두드러지게 나타나며 해외사례를 통하여 나타난 디자인 특성은 공간의 형태적, 재료적, 색채적, 감성적 표현특성으로 구분할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 이렇게 분석된 디자인 특성을 통하여 새로운 유스호스텔 공간 디자인 적용방법에 대한 이해의 폭을 넓히고 미래의 숙박 공간 디자인에 풍부한 가능성을 제시하고자 한다.
