The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of the self-responsibility emotion and self-efficacy in fear appeal on behavioral intention. The experimental design of this study is 2(self-responsibility emotions: high-regret/low-fear) X 2(self-efficacy: high/low) 2-way completely randomized factorial design. The dependent variable is behavior intention. To estimate behavior intention, the intention toward quitting smoking was used. 160 undergraduates of Ewha Womans University participated in this study. They were randomly assigned into the four experimental conditions. The result showed that the two-way interaction effect between self-responsibility emotion and self-efficacy was significant. When self-responsibility of emotion was high(regret), behavior intention was high, regardless of the levels of self-efficacy. However, when self-responsibility of emotion was low(fear), behavior intention was high significantly in the high level of self-efficacy. This study suggests that the fear appeal with high self-responsibility of emotion is the most efficient in public service ads.

본 연구에서는 공포소구에 자기 책임성 수준에 따른 정서와 자기 효능감을 결합하여 이들이 금연의도에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지를 규명하였다. 실험은 이화여자대학교 학부생160명을 대상으로 진행되었으며, 실험설계는 2(자기 책임성 정서: 고(후회)/저(공포))× 2(자기 효능감: 고/저)의 이원완전무선요인설계였고, 4개의 실험조건에 40명씩 무선할당 하였다. 실험결과 자기 책임성 정서와 자기 효능감의 상호작용이 유의하였다. 정서의 자기 책임성이 높은 후회의 조건에서는 자기 효능감의 고/저에 따른 금연의도에서 차이가 유의하지 않았지만, 정서의 자기 책임성이 낮은 공포의 조건에서는 자기 효능감의 고/저에 따른 금연의도에서 차이가 유의하였다. 본 연구결과는 공포소구만으로는 사람의 행동의도를 높이는 것에 한계가 있다는 기존연구의 결과를 지지하였으며, 아울러 금연광고에 대한 공포소구의 수용에 있어서 자기 책임성 정서와 자기 효능감이 중요함을 보여주었다.
