The 17 century is the period when the novel takes a central position in the history of Korean narrative literature. Woonyung-jun was written in the 17 century and is note worthy shows the 17 century’s changes were formed concretely in this work. Woonyung-jun’s structure has been studied from the view of the ‘frame-structure’ and the ‘structure of the sleep-play’ in existing studies. However this analysis is not sufficient, because this work has to be regarded as the work that opened up the structure of the novel while accepting the structure of the Jungi(傳奇). This paper analyzed the woonyung-jun’ structure from the view of the genre’s theory, and investigated its meaning in the history of the novel. Woonyung-jun’s structure is formed in the fold structure. If the structure of conflict is inspected from the view of the genre, this work can be divided into two. One is the Jungi(傳奇)’ structure being told about ‘Youyung’. The other is the novel’s structure being told about ‘Woonyung and Kimjinsa’. The Youyung’ structure has three kinds of special features. 1. X who is in discord with the world existence. 2. X unexpectedly meets Y, who doesn’t have asocial relationship with X. 3. X endures change as a result of this meeting. These are the same with the Jungi(傳奇)’ structure. It is also similar in that the focus is fixed on one man who is the hero. The narrator doesn’t pay attention to the space-time that Youyung doesn’t exist. The structure of Woonyung and Kimjinsa’s tale has a different feature than that of the Youyung’ structure. There are two kinds. One is the feature that the relationship of the hero and the world is described as directly opposing each other. The other is the point of view that the object of the focus is variously to show that the relationship is based on mutual predominance. We can draw various relations in the conflict in woonyung-jun for example, the conflict of thecourt ladies to Anpyung, Kimjinsa to Anpyung, Kimjinsa to male servant-Teuk, Woonyung․Kimjinsa to the female shaman. It is important that these conflicts, which directly oppose each other, are exhibited concretely. On the basis of the above mentioned, we estimate that Woonyung-jun has three meanings in the novel’s history. 1. This work secured the structure of the conflict like a novel, while accepting the Jungi’s framework. 2. The conflict of this work is developedby being based on mutual predominance. 3. This work’s circulation- structure is still contributing to future works. Through this analysis of this thesis, we concluded that our narrative literature began to pay attention to the spot that can’t be described by the frame of Jungi(傳奇), and this spot is described from the viewpoint of Woonyung-jun.

17세기는 우리 서사문학사에서 소설이 중심적 위치를 차지하기 시작하는 시기이다. 17세기 초에 창작되었다고 보이는 <운영전>은 17세기적 변화가 구체적으로 형상화되어 있다는 점에서 많은 연구자들의 주목을 받아 왔다. 기존 논의에서는 <운영전>의 구조를 액자 구조와 몽유 구조라는 틀 속에서 분석해 왔지만, 몽유 구조로 분석하는 데에는 문제가 있다. 이 작품은 전기의 틀을 수용하면서, 새롭게 소설적 구조를 개척한 작품으로 보아야 하기 때문이다. 본고에서는 기존 논의 검토에서 드러난 구조 분석의 미진한 부분에 착목하여 <운영전>의 구조를 갈등을 중심으로 장르론적 입장에서 분석하고, 그 소설사적 의미를 부여했다. 우선 <운영전>은 기존 연구자들에 의해 지적되어 왔듯이, 중층 구조를 이루고 있다. 갈등구조를 중심으로 한 장르론적 관점에서 보면, 크게 두 층위로 나눌 수 있는데, 하나는 유영의 이야기를 형상화하고 있는 큰 틀에서의 傳奇구조이고, 다른 하나는 운영과 김진사의 이야기를 형상화한 액자 속의 소설적 구조이다. 이 작품의 큰 틀을 도식화해 보면, 그 구조가 ‘a. 세계와 불화 관계에 있는 X가 있다./ b. X는 사회적으로 정합관계에 있지 않은 Y와 느닷없는 만남을 경험한다./ c. X는 Y와의 만남을 계기로 존재적 변화를 겪는다.’라는 세 가지 특징으로 파악되는데, 이러한 특징은 그 이전 시대의 전기 작품들의 구조적 특징과 일치한다. 이러한 구조적 특성에 더하여 초점화 대상이 주인공 한 명에 고정되어 있다는 점도 이전 전기와 마찬가지이다. 유영 이야기 틀에서 화자가 유영이 존재하는 시공을 벗어난 지점에 주목하는 일은 일어나지 않는다. 화자가 주목하는 초점화 대상이 주인공 유영으로 제한된다는 의미이다. 초점화 대상이 유영을 벗어나는 경우가 없다는 점에서, <운영전> 역시 운영과 김진사가 겪는 소설적 갈등과는 별도로 유영이 겪고 있는 또 다른 전기적 갈등이 존재하고 있다고 보아도 좋다는 점을 지적했다. 작은 틀인 운영과 김진사의 이야기에서 우리는 유영 이야기의 틀이 지니는 전기의 갈등구조와는 전혀 생소한 형상을 찾을 수 있었다. 그것은 두 가지로 지적되었는데, 하나는 세계와의 대결 양상이 ‘직접 맞섬의 관계’로 형상화되어 있다는 점이고, 다른 하나는 그러한 맞섬의 관계가 상호 우위에 입각해 있다는 것을 명백히 해 주기 위한 장치로서 ‘초점화 대상이 다극화’되어 있다는 점이었다. 운영과 김진사의 이야기 틀에서 우리는 운영을 비롯한 궁녀들과 안평대군의 갈등, 김진사와 안평대군의 갈등, 김진사와 노비 특의 갈등, 운영․김진사와 무녀와의 갈등 등 다양한 갈등 관계를 추출할 수 있었다. 이들의 갈등은 화자 진술이나 특정한 인물의 발화를 통해 간단하게 서술되고 마는 것이 아니라 직접 맞서는 지점들이 구체적으로 제시되어 있다는 점에서 중요하다. 이와 관련하여 갈등이 화자의 진술이나 다른 인물의 발화를 통해 간접적으로 드러나는 것이 아니라 인물들 자신의 발화를 통해, 독립적인 입장에서 명확히 그 모습을 드러내고 있음을 보였다. 나아가 인물들이 갈등을 빚고 있는 모습을 그리면서, 인물 관계가 상호 우위에 입각해 있는 지점을 보여주기 위해, 다양한 갈등 주체들을 독립시켜 형상화시키는 것을 본고에서는 초점화 대상의 다극화로 개념화했다. 이상의 분석을 근거로 하여, 본고에서는 <운영전>에 보이는 갈등구조가 우리 소설사에서, 이전 시대 전기의 틀을 수용하면서도 소설적 갈등구조를 명백히 확보했다는 점, 애정을 소재로 하고 있으면서도 애정의 문제를 넘어 애정에서 부수되어 발생하는 갈등 지점에 착목하고 있다는 점, 그리고 이러한 갈등이 상호 우위에 입각해서 전개된다는 점에서 중요한 의미를 지닌다고 평가했다. 또 <운영전>이 우리 영웅․군담소설에 전형적으로 보이는 ‘순환구조’가 최초로 보이는 작품이라는 점에서 후대 소설과의 영향관계에도 일정하게 기여하고 있다는 점도 함께 언급했다. 본고의 분석을 통해 이제 우리의 서사문학이 전기의 틀로는 더 이상 형상화할 수 없는 문제 지점들에 착목하기 시작했으며, <운영전>에서 비로소 그러한 문제 지점들이 작품으로 형상화되기 시작했다는 점을 명확히 이해할 수 있게 되었다.
