This treatise is designed to re-illuminate all the movements of Park Seung-Keuk in a bigger frame confining them with special reference to Japanese occupation. He served in many activities such as peninsular youth club, Suwon youth alliance, Shingan-hoe’s national movement, Sujin farmers’ trade union, and liberal art movement including Carf’s activity. During the time of Japanese settlement, Park Seung Keuk led various activities of national movements including Suwon & Hwasung region. He had got through many different lives as nationalist, youth
movement leader, public leader, and even man of literature.
He was born in Jungmoon-ri, Yanggam-myeon, Hwasung-shi, Suwon on Dec. 1909. Except short term during which had studied in Japan, Park Seung-Keuk never leave his hometown throughout the Japanese occupation period. His entire life got along within Suwon & Hwasung region spearheading some movements like Shingan-hoe, Suwon youth alliance, Sujin farmers trade union, and Suwon branch of Carf movement. Especially since 1934, he lived as a pure writer after dismissed Suwon social gathering. In addition to this, though it is not dealt in this treatise, he made a vivid footprint in Suwon Journalist alliance, Suwon trade union, and Suwon youth group alliance in one way or the other.
Such activities of Park Seung-Keuk were entirely derived from localism of his hometown. But at the same time, his capability as a member of executive went beyond and stretched out to All Joseon Youth Alliance, Farmers union, Proletariat Art Union throughout the country. Especially when they went in malfunction, he dare came up with an alternative.
Unfortunately, there are some pros & cons whether he really was a socialist in terms of he, for a time being, got involved with social movement as a Chairman of People’s Liberation Army and left wing’s movements. Albeit, due to this reason, he has been evaluated in inappropriate way for more than hundred years, his entire life left a room for re-consideration.

본고는 주로 박승극의 삶을 일제강점기에 한정하여 그의 활동 중에서 반도청년회와 수원청년동맹을 중심으로 한 청년운동, 신간회를 중심으로 한 민족운동, 수진농민조합을 중심으로 한 농민운동, 그리고 카프의 활동을 포함한 문예운동을 큰 틀에서 재조명하고자한 것이었다. 일제강점기 수원을 포함한
화성지역의 민족운동을 비롯하여 다양한 활동에는 박승극이 그 중심에 있다.
박승극은 민족운동가, 청년운동가, 대중운동가, 그리고 문학인으로써 다양한 삶을 살았다.
1909년 12월 현 경기도 화성시 양감면 정문리에서 출생한 박승극은 일본동경유학 생활을 제외하면 일제강점기 동안 한 번도 고향인 화성과 수원을 떠나지 않고 생활하였다. 일제강점기 박승극의 삶은 수원, 넓은 의미에서 화성과 함께 숨을 쉬면서 신간회, 수원청년동맹, 수진농민조합, 카프 수원지부에서 핵심인물로 활동하였고, 이들 단체를 이끌어갔다. 뿐만 아니라 1934년 수원지역 사회단체를 해소한 후에는 순수 문학인으로서 삶을 지향하였다. 이외에도 박승극은 본 발표문에서는 다루지 못하였지만 수원기자동맹, 수원노동조합, 수원소년동맹 등 다양한 단체와 직간접적으로 관계를 맺고 활동하였다.
박승극의 이와 같은 활동은 지역사회에 대한 강한 연고와 애착을 가지고 있었기 때문이기도 하였다. 뿐만 아니라 지역인물의 한계를 극복하고 조선청년총동맹, 조선농민총동맹, 조선프롤레타리아예술동맹 등 중앙본부의 집행위원 등으로 적극적으로 참여하여 활동하였다. 그리고 이들 단체가 본질적으로
그 역할을 다하지 못할 때는 해소를 주장하고 대안을 제시하기도 하였다.
다만 박승극의 삶과 활동은 일제강점기 사회주의자 또는 사회주의운동을 하였다는 것과, 해방 후 인민위원회의 위원장을 역임하는 등 좌익계열에서의 활동과 월북 등이 문제가 되어 탄생 1백년이 된 오늘까지도 제대로 평가되지 못하고 있는 것이 제고의 여지가 있다고 하겠다.
