The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics and types of caring teachers from the perceptions of middle school students. Middle school students, 154 boys and 149 girls, responded to a open-ended questionnaire asking about the ways caring teachers they perceived acted towards students and how they did in the classroom. These responses along with an additional interview with 9 boys from a middle school were coded and analyzed. Four categories and nine subcategories were drawn such as 'Understanding', 'Effort for students' growth', 'Effective teaching', 'Discipline'. Transforming these qualitative data into quantitative data, we examined the differences in these four categories called as 'caring teacher' characteristics according to students' and teachers' gender and further investigated the types of 'caring teachers' by using cluster analysis. Differences was found in students' response to caring teachers' characteristics according to students' and teachers' gender. And three different types of caring teachers indicates caring can be perceived in a variety of ways.

본 연구는 중학교 남학생 154명과 여학생 149명이 작성한 자신이 생각하는 ‘배려하는 교사’에 대한 개방적 진술을 분석하여 중학생이 인식하는 ‘배려하는 교사’의 특성과 유형을 살펴보았다. ‘배려하는 교사’의 특성은 4가지 범주(이해와 존중, 성장에 대한 노력, 몰두하는 수업, 엄격함)로 분류되었다. 학생성별, 교사성별에 따른 ‘배려하는 교사’의 특성의 차이와 ‘배려하는 교사’의 유형을 군집분석을 통해 탐색한 결과, 학생과 교사의 성별에 따라 ‘배려하는 교사’의 특성에 차이가 나타났으며, ‘배려하는 교사’의 유형으로 3가지 유형(이해심 많고 잘 가르치는 교사, 이해심은 많지만 잘 가르치지 못하는 교사, 엄격하고 잘 가르치는 교사)이 발견되었다. 본 연구는 학생의 성장과 발달에 필수적인 역할을 하는 교사의 ‘배려'가 학생들에게 어떻게 인식되는지를 살펴봄으로써, 교사의 ‘배려'를 드러내는 구체적인 행동과 유형을 파악할 수 있었다는 점에서 교사교육과 학교현장에 시사하는 바가 크다.
