This paper is to study the social reform and national movements of christianity and its characteristics from 1884 to 1900 in Korea. Although Christianity was publically accommodated by an opening will of Innovational faction in Seoul, it spontaneously accepted by Korean people in Manchuria area since 1870. The Koreans converted from the heathendom world to christianity with a religious worry like human and eternity, sin and penality. They approached christianity through the bible and christianity pamphlets. They saw christianity as a religion that solved only the worry of human and the problem of the death. However, when a church grew and christian was increased, they learned christian ethics through the bible and evangelical pamphlets. And also, the christian education caused social innovational movement based on christian ethics to them.Meanwhile, social innovational movement refused worship and sacrifice to image, and prohibited a liquor, a cigarette, and opium in traditional Korea society. In Korea, it reformed the feudal and national contradictions like a problem of marriage and funeral, feminine right, and corruption of bureaucrat. The independency association made by Seo, Jae-pil attempted active social reform movement and national movement from 1896 to 1899.These movements have theologically three backgrounds. At first, it was conservative and evangelical theology. In Korea, the conservative and evangelical theology made by America's missionaries emphasized religious ethics. And it had an ideal that christianity is the source for civilization. Therefore, In Korea, conservative and evangelical theology could change the traditional social thought and system. Secondly, It was Puritan-Pietism Faith. It required ethical purity of church and high ethics of believers in order to practice them. Christian in Korean practiced Puritan-Pietism Faith in realm of ethic through the refuge of worship to Image. Thirdly, It was Nevius and Denis' Mission theology. It served as an principle of social participation in Korea. Meanwhile, These movements have three elements in Characteristics. At first, it has an characteristic of biblical movement. Secondly, it has an characteristic of anti-feudalism and anti-foreign movement. Thirdly, it has an characteristic of Holism.

이 논문은 초기 한국 기독교의 사회개혁과 민족운동의 역사적 전개와 신학적 배경, 그리고 그 성격에 대하여 논구한다. 이를 위해 필자는 먼저 초기 한국기독교인의 사회개혁과 민족운동을 역사적으로 고찰한다. 특히 초기 기독교인들의 기독교 교리와 윤리에 입각한 사회개혁운동과 독립협회의 사회․민족운동을 기독교와의 관계 하에서 역사적으로 고찰하였다. 필자의 연구에 의하면 1870년대 만주지역에서 입교한 기독교인들은 인간과 영원, 죄와 형벌의 종교적 고민과 관련되어 기독교에 입교하였다. 이들은 개화파 인사들과는 달리 성경과 기독교 소책자를 통해 기독교에 접근했으며, 기독교를 사회사상적, 개화운동적 차원에서 보다는 인간의 내면적 고민과 사후세계의 문제를 해결하는 종교로 파악했다. 그러나 1890년대 이후 교회가 성장하고 기독교인의 수가 증가함에 따라 성경, 전도문서에 의한 기독교 교육은 한국사회에 소규모였지만, 기독교 윤리에 근거한 사회개혁운동을 일으키게 되었다. 기독교 윤리에 근거한 사회개혁운동은 우상숭배와 제사의 거부, 술, 담배, 아편의 금지, 그리고 혼례와 장례의 문제, 여성의 인권, 관리들의 부정부패와 같은 봉건적, 민족적 모순에 대한 비판과 개혁노력으로 나타났다.한편 초창기 기호지방의 개화파 지식인들에 기독교 선교는 직접적인 복음전도 보다 신교육을 통한 간접적인 문화선교 방식이 주종을 이루었다. 윤치호(尹致昊), 서재필(徐載弼) 등 당시 지식인들은 문명개화의 맥락에서 기독교를 수용하였고, 이렇게 ‘서구 기독교 문명의 힘’의 사상적 세례를 받은 신지식층 학생들과 양반 개혁 관료출신의 지식인들은 배재학당 내의 협성회와 독립협회를 통하여 사회개혁과 민족운동을 전개하였다. 특히 기독교인들은 독립협회의 창립과 지부 결성 등에 적극적으로 참여하였고, 만민공동회를 비롯한 반봉건, 반외세, 애국계몽과 국권회복운동 등에 적극적으로 참여하였다. 그런데 필자는 이 논문에서 이와 같은 역사적 논구를 바탕으로 선교초기 한국 기독교의 사회․민족운동의 신학적 배경을 파악하였다. 즉 필자의 연구에 의하면 선교초기 한국 기독교의 사회․민족운동은 한국에 내한한 선교사들의 보수적 복음주의 신학과 청교도적 경건주의 신앙, 네비우스의 선교방법론과 제임스 덴니스의 선교신학을 그 신학적 배경으로 하고 있다는 것이다. 그리고 마지막으로 이 논문은 한국 기독교 사회․민족운동의 성격을 규명하였다. 즉 필자는 본 논문에서 한말 기독교 사회·민족운동은 성서적 사회․민족운동, 반봉건적 사회운동, 반외세적 민족운동, 그리고 진보와 보수의 이념적 갈등을 뛰어넘는 통전적 사회․민족운동의 성격을 지니고 있는 것으로 보았다.
