The aim of this article is to establish the purpose and character of Essay Writing education and to try to find guidance to teach. Essay writing education of elementary Moral Education subject has to be focused on building character and morality, so to speak, the value education. For this, the themes of essays of Ethics must be connected with value, therefore the contents must be approached to recognition and solution of the problem and also to ethical writing to express students' will to act. And a phase writing policy to consider the advancement of human knowledge must be pursued. After firming up these purposes and characters, we have to choose the suitable ways for elementary Moral Education subject, of all things. Discussion and reading to extend critical and logical thinking must go side by side with essay writing all the time. Essay writing education of elementary Moral Education subject is more effective when it is united with other subjects like Korean reading, writing or knowledge related subjects and when many kinds of material like a movie or a newspaper is used. At this point in time to notify new curriculum and to develop new textbook, above all things, we have to try to reflect the contents of essay writing on a textbook.

본 연구의 목적은, 초등 도덕 교과에서 실시하고자 하는 논술 교육의 목적과 성격을 확립하고 지도 방안을 모색하는 데에 있다. 초등 도덕 교과에서의 논술 교육은 인성 및 도덕성 함양을 위한 논술, 가치 교육을 위한 논술이라는 점에 그 목적을 두어야 한다. 이를 위해 도덕과에서의 논술은 가치가 들어간 주제를 선정해야 하고, 문제에 대한 인식과 해결 방법 및 학생의 실천의지가 표현되는 윤리적 글쓰기로 접근되어야 한다. 또한 초등학생의 인지발달 상태를 고려한 단계적 글쓰기 전략이 추구되어야 한다. 이러한 목적과 성격을 확고히 한 이후에 현재 실행되고 있는 수많은 논술 지도법 중에서 초등 도덕과 수업에 적합한 방법들을 취사선택할 필요가 있다. 학생의 비판적 사고력, 논리적 사고력을 확장시켜주는 토론과 연계한 논술 지도는 초등 도덕과 수업에 적용할 수 있는 유효적절한 방법이다. 또 초등 도덕 교과에서의 논술은 국어과의 읽기, 쓰기 영역 및, 주제와 관련된 지식을 제공하는 타 교과 수업과 연계하여 통합적으로 실시할 필요가 있으며, 영화나 신문 등과 같은 다양한 매체를 활용할 때 보다 효과적이다. 개정 교육과정이 고시되고 새 교과서 개발이 진행되고 있는 현재 시점에서는, 무엇보다도 교과서에 논술 지도를 위한 내용이 반영될 수 있도록 노력해야 할 것이다.
