According to the views on career development, human development is a continuous process that embodies stages of recognition, investigation, preparation and specialization. Therefore, kindergarten and elementary school can be regarded as the initial stages of recognition and investigation. Consequently, it is important to apply a systematic career education programs so that firm basis for latter stages of development can be established. In the course of career education, it is most important to identify one's aptitude. The theories of multiple intelligence can be helpful. The purpose of this study is to identify the effects of multiple intelligence based career education programs on elementary school children's career maturity. Following results are obtained from the analysis: First, multiple intelligence based career education programs have positive effects on the elementary school children's career maturity. There is a significant difference (t(59)=2.212, p<.05) between the experiment group (M=1.70) and the control group (M=1.58). Second, multiple intelligence based career education programs have positive effects on sub-factors, such as disposition and compromise. As the result of 4th graders' career maturity on the sub-areas, there are no statistically significant difference on planning quality factor (F(1, 59)= 1.694, p>.05) and decisiveness factor (F(1, 59)= 3.679, p>.05) but there are statistically significant difference on disposition (F(1, 59)= 8.228, p<.01) and compromise (F(1, 59)= 4.531, p<.05) factors. The average of experiment group is higher on all factors in the sub-areas except the planning factor. Furthermore, through the observation and data gathered from the students' essays, the experiment group's career maturity increased significantly. Based on these results, it is concluded that the multiple intelligence based career education programs have positive effects on the elementary school children's career maturity.

진로에 대한 발달적 견해에 따르면 인간의 발달은 계속적인 과정으로서 인식, 탐색, 준비 및 전문화의 단계를 거친다. 이러한 입장에 의하면 유치원과 초등학교시기를 진로에 대해서 처음으로 인식하게 되는 인식의 단계 및 탐색의 초기 단계로 보고, 따라서 유치원 및 초등학교 시기부터 의도적이고 체계적인 진로교육을 수행함으로써 그 이후 단계의 진로에 대한 원만한 성숙과 발달을 이룰 수 있을 것이다. 또한 진로에 있어서 가장 중요한 것은 자신의 적성을 이해하는 것이며, 이를 가장 잘 뒷받침해 줄 만한 이론은 다지능이론에서 찾을 수 있다. 본 연구는 이러한 교육적 필요를 바탕으로 다지능에 기초한 진로교육프로그램을 적용하여 초등학생의 진로의식 성숙에 미치는 효과를 규명해보고자 하였다. 연구결과, 첫째 진로의식 성숙도 사후검사에서 다지능에 기초한 진로교육프로그램을 처치한 실험집단이 통제집단보다 평균이 높게 나타났다. 둘째, 진로의식 하위영역에서는 성향과 타협성이 통계적으로 유의미한 차이를 보였으며 계획성을 제외한 성향, 타협성, 결정성이 모두 통제집단보다 평균이 높게 나타났다. 셋째, 진로교육프로그램 중 도움이 되었다고 생각하는 프로그램 중 진로교육 영역별로 보았을 때는 자기이해 영역이 가장 높았고, 진로계획, 직업이해, 진로의사결정 순으로 나왔다. 소감문과 연구자의 관찰을 통해 실험집단의 진로에 대한 관심과 흥미가 높아졌음을 알 수 있다. 위의 연구 결과들에 기초해 볼 때 다지능에 기초한 진로교육프로그램은 초등학생의 진로의식 성숙에 긍정적인 변화를 가져와 효과적이었다고 할 수 있다.
