This study examines the current extent and the need of the church's involvement in society; it then proposes as an alternative the necessity of Christian spirituality being the backbone of its social participation activity in order to seek its role in the economic crisis. Further, it is emphasized that the real role of the church in the economic crisis is to be trusted by and give hope to Korean society through building a mission strategy that gives priority to public benefit. To conclude, it is suggested that firstly, the church carry out its social duty both biblically and spiritually; secondly, the most important service the church can practice for society is mission that benefits the public; thirdly, prior to its involvement in social work, it is important for churches to recover authentic Christian spirituality to reaffirm its true identity. These steps will equip the church in the current economic crisis to carry out its role as a safety net for society.

본 연구는 경제위기 속에서의 교회의 역할을 모색하기 위해 먼저 교회의 사회참여 실태와 필요성을 제시하였고, 기독교 영성이 뒷받침하는 교회의 사회참여 활동이 필요함을 대안으로 제시하였다. 또한 경제위기 가운데 교회는 사회공익을 우선적으로 하는 선교전략을 세움으로 한국사회에 신뢰받고 소망을 제시해 줄 수 있는 것이 교회의 역할임을 강조하였다. 결론적으로 교회는 첫째, 성서적으로나 영성적으로 사회적 책임을 다하여야 한다는 것이다. 둘째, 교회가 사회에 대하여 할 수 있는 가장 중요한 봉사는 공익을 위하는 선교라는 점이다. 셋째, 사회에 대한 활동에 앞서 교회는 참다운 기독교 영성의 회복을 통하여 교회가 교회다워지는 것이 중요하다는 점이다. 그렇게 함으로 경제위기 상황에서 교회는 사회적 안전망으로서의 역할을 감당해 나갈 수 있는 것이다.
