Christian education is now faced with a serious crisis that reading the Bible and listening biblical messages can no longer change Christians’ lives in reality. This study focuses on “dualistic reading” as its crucial cause, examines how dualism affects ‘reading’ in general, and how it puts down roots as ‘dualistic schemata’ in reading. As reading the Bible as well as fairy tales, animations and films, we concentrate reading upon separating into right and wrong, good and evil, beauty and ugly, high and low etc. by making ‘dual oppositions’ in characters or events. It is necessary to distinguish between good and evil, right and wrong etc. in view of the antagonistic relationship. However the problem at issue is to bring reading to an conclusion in separation and dualism. Reading with ‘dualism-schemata’ allows the one to control, exclude, condemn and judge the other. This study therefore indicates harmful effects of dualistic reading, and explores the ‘Bible reading’ to overcome the hazards and risks of dualistic schemata, centering on the Esther chapter 1-3. The first work for re-reading the text is to make a diagnosis of dualistic schemata related to the text in reading: for example, judging characters (Vashiti, Esther and the king Ahasuerus) and events with a standard of judgement of dual oppositions that ‘obedience is good; disobedience is evil’, ‘enthronement is success; dethronement is failure’ etc. The second is to propose the usage of the ‘KWL chart’ and ‘close reading’ as a methodology to overcome the dualistic reading. The third is that in the process of re-reading this study leads us to recognize that dualistic reading is the main reading pattern of characters in the text as well as readers, and that the Bible text itself deconstructs the dualism in the biblical drama. The ultimate purpose of this study is thus to investigate a new Biblical reading to heal dualistic schemata, by responding to the question of “what is the Babel tower we should demolish in reading?”

본 연구는 삶의 변화를 이끌어내지 못하는 기독교 교육의 현실 한복판에서, 그 문제의 원인이 우리의 잘못된 성서 읽기, 즉 이분법적 읽기에 있음을 핵심적으로 지적하고 분석한다. 동화를 읽을 때나 만화나 영화를 볼 때, 사람이나 생물체를 판단하거나 심지어 성서를 읽을 때조차도, 이분법적 스키마타를 작동시킴으로서 등장인물들이나 사건들을 이항대립으로 놓고, 옳고 그름, 위 아래, 선 악 등을 분리하는 데 주목한다. 옳고 그름은 구별하는 것은 필요하다. 그러나 문제는 읽기가 거기서 종결된다는 데 있다. 이분법적 읽기는 어느 한쪽이 다른 한 쪽을 통제하고 배제하며 심판 정죄하게 만드는데 그 폐해의 심각성이 있다. 본 연구는 에스더서 1-3장을 중심으로 이분법적 스키마타를 극복하고 치유하는 성서 읽기를 전개시킨다. 그 첫 번째 활동으로, 성서 독자가 본문에 접근하는 이분법적 읽기는 어떤 것이 있는지를 진단한다. 즉 기존의 읽기의 예를 들면, 성서 독자는 와스디와 에스더를, 와스디와 왕을 이항대립으로 놓는 것을 시작으로, 불순종은 악, 순종은 선이라는 이분법, 왕후폐위는 실패요 왕후등극은 성공 등의 이분법적 스키마타를 판단 기준으로 작동시키며 읽는 것이다. 따라서 두 번째로 본 연구는 성서 읽기에서 이분법적 읽기를 치유하는 진행 방법으로서 오글의 KWL 읽기과정과 휘오렌자의 해석학적 방법론 및 토마스 그룸의 나눔의 실천의 활동들을 통합하여 6단계의 방법론을 제시한다. 세 번째로, 본 연구는 여러 각도의 물음을 가지고 다시 읽기를 하는 과정에서, 이분법적 읽기의 스키마타는 비단 성서 독자뿐 아니라 성서 속 등장인물들의 주된 읽기 양태였다는 사실을 밝혀주고, 성서 본문 자체가 성서 드라마 가운데서 바로 그 이분법을 해체시키는 텍스트라는 사실도 깨닫게 한다. 성서는 읽기 측면에서 우리가 치유하고 허물어야 하는 바벨탑은 바로 이분법적 스키마타임을 보여준다. 결과적으로 본 연구는 에스더서 1-3장 본문이 제안하는 읽기 양태란 옳고 그름을 판정하는 심판자적인 이분법적 읽기 대신 생명의 행ㆍ불행에 관심하는 구원자적이며 관계적인 통전적 읽기에 있다는 점을 제시한다.
