The purpose of this study was to investigate why childcare facilities provided poor prolonged childcare service despite the high demand for the service from the consumers. For that purpose, a survey and in-depth interviews were conducted with 47 managers of childcare facilities in Iksan City, Jeollabuk Province. They were asked if they provided prolonged childcare service and how they thought of such service.The survey results indicate that they “didn't provide prolonged childcare service” of any types and that their formal and informal reason was “because there were no parents wanting prolonged childcare service.” The biggest number of the subjects said that they had “no intention” to start prolonged childcare service of any types in future. The interview results how that there were various types of prolonged childcare service at the childcare facilities that were not appointed to provide such service. Those facilities were not appointed because most of their prolonged childcare service was intermittent as opposed to continuous.

본 연구는 시간연장형 보육서비스에 대한 수요자의 요구는 높은 반면 공급자인 보육시설의 시간연장형 보육서비스 운영실태가 저조한 이유를 밝히고자 전라북도 익산시의 보육시설 운영자 47명을 대상으로 시간연장형 보육의 실시 여부와 시간연장형 보육 실시에 대한 인식을 설문조사와 심층면접을 통하여 조사하였다. 이에 대한 설문조사 결과, 보육시설의 시간연장형 보육서비스 운영 현황은 모든 시간연장형 보육에서 ‘실시안함’, 공식적으로든 비공식적으로든 실시하지 않는 이유는 ‘시간연장형 보육을 원하는 부모가 없어서’, 추후 실시 의향은 모든 시간연장형 보육서비스에 대하여 ‘실시의향 없음’이 가장 높게 나타났으며 면접조사 결과, 미지정 시간연장 보육시설에서의 시간연장 보육 형태는 다양하였으며, 시간연장 보육시설로 지정받지 못하는 이유는 계속적인 시간연장 보육이 아닌 단속적인 시간연장 보육이 대부분이기 때문인 것으로 나타났다.
