This study attempts to explore the meanings and future direction of youth culture centers as neighborhood spaces through a qualitative research method. While there have been quantitative studies on youth facilities, few qualitative research studies have been conducted to show vivid description on youths using the facilities. Thus, this study investigates in depth the meanings of youth facilities as neighborhood spaces and functions of social interactions constructed in the spaces. While participating in the youth culture centers, youths could have hands-on experiences related with their interests and future career. And their interests on neighborhood have increased. In addition, they have been learning interpersonal skills through friends and youth leaders and could have better understandings on social groups and organizations. In addition to social dimension, they could have a turning point and new goal for their life through new knowledge and experiences, which they have never faced before. Based on such findings, this article suggests that youth culture centers need to be situated as neighborhood spaces to develop youth competency.

본 연구는 청소년시설을 이용하는 청소년들에 대한 구체적인 질적 조사를 통해 지역사회 공간으로서 청소년시설의 의미 및 향후 방향성 모색 방안에 대해 알아보고자 한다. 그간 양화된 지표에 의한 시설평가는 실시되어왔지만 정작 청소년시설의 주인이라 할 수 있는 청소년들의 시설 이용에 대한 구체적인 모습을 드러내는 질적 자료는 전무한 상황이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 청소년시설이 지역사회 청소년공간으로 어떠한 의미를 갖는지, 시설에서 형성되는 사회적 상호작용 등은 어떠한 기능을 하고 있는지에 대해 구체적으로 탐색하고자 한다. 청소년들은 시설 이용 과정에서 자신의 관심분야나 진로에 대한 산지식을 얻고 체험을 할 수 있었으며, 지역사회에 대한 관심이 증가하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 또한 청소년문화의집에서 만나는 또래, 선후배, 지도사들과의 사회관계를 통해 대인관계 방식을 배우며, 사회 집단과 조직에 대한 이해를 넓힐 수 있었다. 사회적 측면과 함께 새로운 활동이나 프로그램 참가 등을 통해 기존에 체험해보지 못한 새로운 지식이나 경험 등을 함으로써 자신의 인생 행로의 전환점을 마련하거나 목표를 새롭게 다지고 있었다. 이러한 결과를 통해 청소년문화의집은 지역사회 역량개발의 장으로 방향성을 모색할 필요성이 제기된다.
