Korea currently has a hard time socially and economically. At this time, spiritual awakening is more needed than anything else. The Church has been emphasizing individual salvation rather than social salvation. Obsessed with vertical love from God, The Churchhas not paid much attention to horizontal love of neighbors. Pursuit of evangelization focusing on mission has led to lack of humanization, and human/material resources have been concentrated on the Church. Due to lack of recognition of social service in pastors and believers, the church is oriented toward quantitative growth so that they spend little budget, which leads to loss of public trust in our society.One of the reasons for this may be because social services of church do not go beyond charity level of service centered on institutes. This phenomenon is not new for these days. It is parallel with the mission policy of most missionaries except only a few in the early times when Christianitywas introduced in Korea. Korea has gone through various changes since Christianity was spread out. While Korea is rapidly changing socially and economically as well as politically, the Church is very insensitive to the changes of society. It is the reality of our Church that disregarding reality, our Church closes the door more tightly where it should open more widely than anywhere else to share sufferings and pains with other peoples. Heung-Jong Choi in Honam region presented a new spirituality for the Church in order to be the Church for neighbors and society, not for its own Church bounded to institutions and creeds. In current 21st century in which Christian faith, even its substantiality is threatened by possession of massive externalism, the life of pastor Heung-Jong Choi will be a good stimulant to make the Church and believers look back on their life of faith. It is wished that this study can reconfigure the role of Korean Christianity in society and reestablish pastor’s life so that it helps Korean Christianity develop and grow toward the direction appropriate for this age instead of being stagnated and even retrogressing Church. The life of pastor O-Bang Heung-Jong Choi to follow Jesus’life has great implication for Christians living in these days. Thus, this study intends to look into his life and examineindigenous social welfare mission focusing on pastor O-Bang Heung-Jong Choi. This study adopted literature review as study method. Based on biblical and theological theories, books on social service and indigenization of Korean Christianity, books published by Gwangju YMCA in memory of pastor O-bang Heung-Jong Choi, Honam Church History Studies, other articles, papers, reports, single volume books, bulletins, and so on, this study conducted extensive literature review.

현재 우리나라는 사회, 경제적으로 힘든 시기이다. 이러한 때 영적으로 깨어있는 것이 무엇보다 필요하다. 교회는 그동안 사회구원보다 개인구원성격을 강조했었다. 수직적인 하나님 사랑에 집착해서 수평적인 이웃사랑에 대한 실천이 부족했다. 선교 중심의 복음화 추구는 인간화에 대한 결여를 가져왔으며, 인적․물적 자원이 교회성장에 집중 투입되었다. 목회자와 성도들의 사회봉사에 대한 인식부족으로 인해 대부분의 교회들이 양적인 성장에 치중을 하고 있어 사회봉사나 구제를 위해서는 낮은 비율의 예산을 지출하고 있으므로 사회의 공신력도 잃어가고 있다. 이것은 교회의 사회봉사활동도 시설을 중심으로 한 시혜적 차원의 봉사활동을 벗어나지 못하고 있는 실정을 그 원인으로 들 수가 있다. 이러한 현상은 어제 오늘의 일이 아니다. 기독교가 우리나라에 전파된 초기 한국의 상황에서도 일부를 제외한 거의 모든 선교사들의 선교방침과도 일맥상통하고 있다. 우리나라는 기독교가 전파된 이래로 다양한 변화를 겪어왔다. 정치는 물론 사회․경제적으로 매우 급변하고 있는 데, 교회는 사회의 변화에 둔감하다. 당면해 있는 현실은 외면한 채 가까이 있는 이민족의 아픔을 함께 나누어야 할 곳으로 더 많은 사람들에게 가장 많이 개방되어야 할 곳이 오히려 더 문을 닫아 두는 것이 우리 교계의 현실이다. 호남지방에서 최흥종은 제도와 교리에 얽매어 자신만을 위한 교회가 아닌 이웃과 사회의 교회가 되도록 새로운 영성을 제시하게 되었다. 기독교의 신앙이 외형적인 거대주의에 휩싸여 그 실체마저도 위험해져 가는 오늘날의 21세기에 오방 최흥종 목사의 삶은 우리 교회와 신앙인들의 삶을 다시 돌아보게 하는 좋은 각성의 역할을 하게 될 것이다. 이 연구를 통해서 한국기독교의 사회에서의 역할을 재조명해 보고, 목회자의 삶을 다시 정립하여 새로운 시대에 도태되는 기독교, 정체되어 오히려 발전이 후퇴되는 기독교가 아닌 이 시대에 맞는 발전하는 기독교상을 세우는 데 재정립 하게 되기를 소망한다. 오방 최흥종 목사의 예수그리스도의 삶을 따르려는 삶은 오늘을 사는 우리 기독인들에게 시사해 주는 바가 크다. 이에 그의 삶을 살펴보고 한국 기독교의 토착적 사회복지선교와 봉사활동을 통하여 교회의 사회에서 역할을 재조명하고 목회자의 삶을 다시 정립하여 새로운 시대에 도태되고 정채 되지 않는 선교와 기독교 사상을 세우는 한국에 전래된 기독교 사회선교를 오방 최흥종 목사를 중심으로 토착적 사회복지선교를 연구해 보고자 한다.
