Unification is the uniting of two societies, but for the people involved, it signifies a new life in a completely new environment. When people who have lived in different environments for a long time suddenly begin living in a unified society, the standards that previously gave structure to their lives no longer effect an influence on them. Thus, the new social environment will require new standards that will hold the new society together. That then is the basis of this study's interest in the unification of societies through resocialization upon unification. Even after political unification, it is only when the resocialization of individuals in their new environment is complete that the true unification of the country can then proceed. This study seeks to define the role of the church in the reunification of the two societies, especially through the experience of North Korean refugees in South Korea. The reason why we focus on them is because their experience foreshadows what North Koreans will likely experience upon unification. Thus, based on the results of studies on their experiences, the role of the church will be discussed. To achieve this, the study first focuses on unification from the perspective of social unification, then reviews the experimental findings from the investigation of North Korean refugees settled in South Korea. Finally, as viewed through the experience of reunification in Germany, the role of the church after unification is discussed.

통일은 두 사회의 통합이지만 사회 구성원들에게는 전혀 새로운 사회 환경에서 살아야 하는 새로운 삶의 시작을 의미한다. 오랫동안 동일한 환경에서 살았던 사람들이 두 체제가 통합된 사회에 살게 될 때에는 이전에 삶을 지탱해 주던 규범들이 지속적으로 영향력을 발휘하기 어렵기 때문이다. 따라서 새로운 사회 환경에서는 새로운 사회를 지탱해 줄 수 있는 새로운 규범 또는 가치 체계를 필요로 한다. 이 연구가 ‘통일 후’ 전개되어야할 재사회화를 통한 사회통합에 관심을 기울이고자 하는 이유가 바로 여기에 있다. 새로운 환경으로서의 ‘통일 후’의 시기에 이루어질 각 개인들의 재사회화가 완성될 때에야 비로소 실제로 통일이 되었다고 이야기할 수 있기 때문이다. 이 연구에서는 특히 새터민들을 통해 통일 후 사회통합을 위한 교회의 역할을 모색해 보고자 한다. 새터민에 주목하는 이유는 새터민들의 경험이 통일 이후 북한 주민들이 겪게 될 경험의 예비 실험적 성격을 포함하고 있다고 보기 때문이다. 이러한 목적으로 이 글에서는 새터민들의 의식 조사를 통해 얻은 경험 자료를 바탕으로 통일 후 교회의 역할에 대해서 논하고자 하는 것이다. 이를 위하여 이 글에서는 먼저 통일을 사회통합의 관점에서 접근해서 이해하고, 새터민들의 의식 조사를 한 경험 자료를 검토한 후에, 독일의 경험에 비추어 통일 후 교회의 역할에 대하여 논하고 있다.
