The thought of order always presupposes how the cohesion of individuals is formed in a society. As the origin of social cohesion, the British classical economists emphasized the spontaneous interactions of individuals, whereas the German Historical School advocated the ‘spirit of a people’. The ordoliberals are very German in the recognition and interest towards the social holism, but they are never German as far as they advocate a clear separation between nation and economy. Röpke regarded the non-economic areas like philosophy, ethics, society, culture and politics as important in economic analysis. He believed that the problem of social collapse due to congestion could be solved by the rehabilitation of small human communities, which differs from Müller Armack’s idea emphasizing the nation’s role. Eucken, Röpke and Rüstow are ideally associated with the German holism, but they are Smithian in advocating the functional differentiation. Müller-Armack is deeply influenced by the German Historical School, superficially dealing with the functional separation in their concept of social market economy from which today’s structural crisis originates.
