The comb has been a tool of absolute necessity for mankind through all agesand countries. In old times, it used to be a symbol of chastity. However, the study of Korean combs’ history has been insufficint, therefore, It has been researched the history of transition of combs based on the Oriental and Occidental points of view. This research has studied cultural interchanges between East and West through the combs and changes of their shapes.In chapter two, this study has looked into the theoretical backgrounds, definitions, and different kinds of them. Chapter three is about the differences between Korean combs and Western combs, or Oriental and Occidental, and their history of transition. And chapter four mentioned about some collections of Korean museums and the Metropolitan museum and theories based on the literatures from the National Central Library and National Assembly Library. In this study we could find that Korean combsand Western combs have been made their transitions through the cultural exchanges. Practicalityit wasemphasized on both of Korean and Western combs and they were given the symbolism andornamental -ismof each culture by their users. And it was expressed uponthe social status and economical ablity of their users. The diversities of patterns and differences of materials were presented upon the social status of their users.
