Previous research on Korean language education has been mostly comparative analyses between the Korean and Chinese languages or error analyses. Such studies are obviously an important area of language education. However, we need to turn our attention to discourse analysis from a comparative language‐cultural viewpoint that can derive discourse strategies for fostering practical communication skills in face‐to‐face situations. Recognizing the necessity, this study attempted to analyze the patterns of turn taking in Korean and Chinese movies as a comparative language‐cultural approach for improving intercultural communication between Korea and China. It may be ideal to analyze real discourses, but due to limitations in data collection and analysis, this study was conducted with movies, whose form of discourses is considered similar to that of real discourses. In addition, we chose Korean movie Ditto(동감, 2000) and its remade Chinese movie Sky of Love(情牽一線, 2003), which have the same characters and story, so that factors other than language‐cultural differences may not work as variables. In the results of analyzing patterns of turn taking in the movies, characters in the Chinese movie used speaker centered direct linguistic expressions and implemented turn taking in a way of manifesting the speaker’s position. On the contrary, characters in the Korean movie used hearer‐centered indirect periphrastic expressions with discourse indexes suggesting the maintenance or switch of topics. As presented above, this study made an attempt to see how language‐cultural difference between Korea and China affects the pattern of turn taking. Through this study, we hope to expand our understanding of language‐cultural difference between Korea and China and, based on that, to develop effective discourse strategies for successful communication between Korean and Chinese speakers.

그동안 (한)국어 교육에서는 한․중 두 나라 언어에 대한 대조 분석적 연구나 오류 분석 연구가 주를 이루어 왔다. 이러한 연구들은 언어 교육의 중요한 영역임에 틀림없다. 그러나 면대면 상황에서 실질적인 의사소통 능력에 도움을 주는 담화 전략을 도출할 수 있는 비교 언어문화적 관점의 담화분석 연구에 관심을 돌릴 필요가 있다. 본고는 이러한 문제의식에서 한․중 두 나라의 문화 간 의사소통 능력 신장을 위한 비교 언어문화적 접근의 하나로 한․중 두 나라 영화를 대상으로 말차례 가지기 양상 분석을 시도하였다. 실제 담화를 이용한 분석이 가장 이상적일 것이나, 자로 수집과 분석의 제한점으로 인하여 실제 담화 형태에 가까운 것으로 판단되는 영화를 대상으로 연구를 진행하였다. 그리고 동일한 인물의 등장과 스토리 전개가 기반이 됨으로써 언어문화적 차이 외에 다른 요인들이 변수로 작용하지 않도록 하기 위해 한국의 <동감, 2000>과 이를 리메이크한 중국의 <정견일선(Sky of Love, 情牽一線, 2003)>을 대상으로 삼았다. 영화 속 말차례 가지기 양상 분석의 결과, 중국 영화 속의 인물은 화자 중심의 직접적인 언어적 표현을 구사하며 자신의 입장을 분명하게 드러내는 방식으로 말차례 가지기를 실현하는 반면에, 한국 영화 속의 인물들은 화제를 유지하기나 전환할 때 이를 짐작할 수 있는 담화 표지를 사용함으로써 청자 중심의 간접적인 완곡한 언어 표현을 사용한다는 사실을 확인할 수 있었다. 이상과 같이 한․중 언어문화의 차이가 말차례 가지기 양상에 미치는 영향을 간략하나마 살펴보는 작은 시도를 통해, 우리는 한․중 언어문화 차이에 대한 인식의 지평을 넓히고 이를 바탕으로 두 언어권 화자의 성공적인 의사소통에 기여할 수 있는 효과적인 담화 전략으로 기능하기를 기대한다.
