Narrative Features of Kim Sa-Ryang’s Novels, As a writer producing works of literature under the utmost pressure of the Japanese colonist governance in the 1940s, Kim Sa-Ryang persisted in writing in both Japanese and Korean, trying to seek a balance between “Resistance” and “Acceptance”, under the severe cultural censorship. Also, by using the colonists language, he sternly criticized the logic of themselves. Through the description of the poverty and sufferings of the Koreans under colonist governance, he exposed and criticized the realities resulted thorn colonization. Through in description of the astonishing power remains in the Koreans and his deep affections towards the Koreans, he injected much hope into the Koreans to rejuvenate their own country. Through depicting the spiritual crushing-down of the Korean intellectuals after submitting themselves to the Japanese, and their self-deception, he ironically and severely exposed the deception of the idea that “Japan and Korea are of one family”. and also the deception of the propaganda of colonization. These are the crystallization of his mightier words. This paper analyzes this mightier force in Kim Sa-Ryang’s works through his wording, expression and narration.

김사량은 일제의 억압이 극에 달했던 1940년대에 활발한 문학 활동을 벌였던 작가이다. 그는 극심한 문화통제 하에서 ‘수용’과 ‘저항’ 사이에서 균형점을 잡으며 이중 언어로 창작 활동을 계속했으며 일본어라는 지배자의 언어를 역이용하여 지배자의 논리를 공격했다. 김사량은 식민지 조선 하층민의 절망적인 가난과 황폐한 삶을 그린 작품을 통하여 식민주의가 초래한 현실적 부당성을 고발하였고 하층민의 짓눌린 삶에서도 놀라운 생명력과 훈훈한 동포애를 발견함으로써 민족의 희망을 제시하고 일제에 대한 간접적인 저항을 시도하였다. 또 동화논리에 굴복하고 아부하는 혹은 자기기만과 도덕적 붕괴를 겪는 성격파탄적인 식민지 지식인을 통해 ‘내선일체’의 기만성과 식민주의의 허구성을 폭로, 비판함으로써 저항적 색채를 짙게 보여주었다. 이것은 시대사상의 강요에 대응하는 문학의 응전력의 과시인 것이다. 본고는 김사량 문학의 이러한 응전력을 언어, 표현수법 등 서술 특성의 각도에서 분석해보았다.
