The purpose of this essay is to present Gilson’s method described in his works Le réalisme thomiste et critique de la connaissance (Thomist realism and the Critique of knowledge), Le réalisme méthodique (Methodical realism), and The Unity of Philosophical Experience. Gilson’s fundamental method for metaphysics and one of the traditional approaches to philosophizing is called “objective realist method” and indicates his fundamental view and attitude. He thought that it was necessary for developing a valid philosophy to accept the realist method as a philosophical method, and accordingly, argued that the critical realism was contradictory like ‘a quadrate circle’, because it is the being that maps out the human recognition on the cognitive subject as well as the external objects. In this reason, he thought that no critics a priori could be justified. The realist method takes the existence as the primary object and the most general principle, and it is built on its evidence. As our thinking always starts from the question about empirical things rather than thinking itself, the critical realists’ arguments on cognitive subject is understood by Gilson as trying to raise questions again about what has already been solved. The second method called “historical methodology” has made him gain the reputation as an philosophical historian. It is proceeded from his first period of search for erudite concern, characterized by historiographic methodology, by way of the period of synthesis of historical interpretations, to research for history of the unique philosophy by means of theoretical discussion of properly philosophical problems. Through the three-stage development, Gilson pursued “the fundamental and united synthesis” where he did not stick to historicism but pursued the ideas beyond the phenomenical level of the philosophical history, while proceeding within the historical context and realizing philosophical goals. By doing so, Gilson discovered the way for a human being as a metaphysical subject to explore the metaphysics of being. Both of Gilson’s realist method and historical methodology served as valid instruments for his philosophical research. Philosophy continuously distinguishes metaphysical ideas and transcendent nature through generalizing the history. The history of ideas proceeds according to necessity and consistency. With his methodology Gilson intended to highlight the metaphysics of being that has continuously repeated the process of emerging and being forgotten in the long history of philosophy. What he has tried to do was to verify that the novelty of Christian thoughts is found from not only the attitude of Christian philosophers but also the contents of metaphysical thoughts originated from Christianity.

이 글은 질송의 저서 토미스트 실재론과 인식 비판 , 방법적 실재론 , 철학적 체험의 통일성 을 중심으로 그의 방법론을 살펴 본 것이다. 전통적 철학하기의 방법이자 질송의 존재의 형이상학에 기본적 인 방법론은 먼저 “객관적 실재론의 방법”이라 부르는 것으로 사 물을 보는 그의 기초적 관점과 태도를 말한다. 그는 철학적 방법으 로서의 이 실재론적 방법론이 ‘유효한 철학’을 설립하기 위해 필수 적이라 여겼다. 그래서 ‘비판적 실재론’을 ‘사각의 원’처럼 모순된 다고 주장한다. 그것은 존재가 외부사물뿐 아니라 인식주체에 대 한 인간인식을 정초하기 때문이다. 따라서 그는 어떠한 선험적인 비판도 정당화될 수 없다고 본다. 실재론적 방법론은 존재를 첫 대 상이자 최고의 원리로서 놓고 그 명증성 위에 설립하는 방법론이 며 그것은 우리 사고의 출발점이 항상 사유 자체가 아닌 인식주체 가 경험한 실재에 대한 질문에서 시작하기 때문에 비판적 실재론 자들의 인식주체에 대한 논의는 이미 확보된 것에 대해 다시 논란 을 제기하는 것이라 본 것이다. 이런 실재론적 방법론을 기초로 한 질송의 두 번째 방법론은 “역사적 방법론”이라 부르는 것으로 질송에게 ‘철학사가’로서 명성 을 가져다준 방법론이다. 그의 탐구 초기의 현학적 관심으로 특정 지어지는 ‘역사편찬적 방법론’에서 출발하여 역사적 사료 해석의 종합을 시도한 시기를 거쳐 본격적인 철학적 문제에 대한 사변적 논변으로 발전되는 ‘하나의 철학의 역사’를 찾아간 질송의 방법론 인 것이다. 이 세 단계의 발전을 통해 질송은 역사주의에 빠지지 않고 철학사의 현상적 차원을 넘어서는, 그러면서도 역사 안에서 전진하며 그 안에서 철학적 목표에 도달하는 ‘본질적이고 통일적 인 종합’을 지향한다. 거기에서 질송은 형이상학적 동물인 인간이 ‘존재의 형이상학’을 탐구하는 길을 발견한다. 결국 실재론적 방법론이나 역사적 방법론은 질송에게 모두 그의 철학적 탐구의 유용한 도구로서의 역할을 했다. 철학은 역사적 귀 납의 길을 통해 형이상학적 개념이자 초월적 본성을 분별하게 했 다. 개념들의 역사는 필연성과 일관성에 따라 전진해간다. 질송은 그의 방법론을 통해 유구한 철학사에서 꾸준히 침몰과 부상을 계 속해 온 ‘존재의 형이상학’을 드러내고자 하였고 그리스도교 사상 의 독창성이 그리스도교인인 철학자의 태도에서 찾아 질 뿐 아니 라 그리스도교에서 유래한 형이상학적 사유 내용에서도 온다는 것 을 밝혀내려 했던 것이다.
