Meister Eckhart, a Master of Theology faculty in the University of Paris and representative medieval mystic in the later medieval ages, has been known for his mystic philosophy
and mysticism. But in my view ‘Mystic Philosophy’ or ‘Mysticism’ is a harmful model for our understanding of thought of Eckhart because, while ‘Mystic’ mostly denotes and is based
on ‘irrational experience’, Thought of Eckhart is very rational.
In recent study of thought of Eckhart such as articles and books by De Libera and K. Flasch etc. there is reaction against view that sees him as a mystic. In common with them, I attempt
to see him primarily as ‘rational’ philosopher.
First, his mysticism didn’t cause from mystical and irrational experience but his rational curiosity or a desire to know about ‘esse’(to be). His starting point was ontological curiosity. He used intellect to satisfy his ontological curiosity. A result of this is his mysticism. Second, like Ockham and another philosophers in his ages after 1277, he used logics and semantics to rationalize his thought and to understand and comment basic point of The Bible. As a consequence, His mysticism is rational, his project constitute a rational philosophy or ontology.

에크하르트를 단순히 신비가 혹은 신비사상가로 여기는 것이 아니라, 이성적 사유를 전개한 철학자로 보려는 시도가 본 연구의 기본적 틀이다. 플라쉬의 해석과 마찬가지로 그의 사상을 신비철학이란 이름, 즉 철학이란 이름을 부과한다면, 그것은 분명히 그의 사상 가운데 이성적이고 합리적인 측면이 있어야만 한다. 바로 그러한 합리성 가운데 그의 신비사상이 성립될 때, 진정 그의 철학은 신비철학이 될 수 있을 것이다.
본 연구는 이를 위하여 우선 그의 사상에 대한 질송과 플라쉬 그리고 리베라와 같은 현대 연구가의 다양한 해석을 살필 것이다. 그런 후에 그의 문헌 가운데 합리성의 논의를 참아 분석할 것이다. 이러한 분석을 통하여 그 역시 오캄과 같은 후기 중세 철학자들과 마찬가지로 뛰어난 의미론적 논변을 구사하였고, 그러한 의미론적 논변 가운데 그의 존재론적 사유를 구사하였으며, 종국에 그의 존재론적 사유를 완성하였음을 보일 것이다. 그리고 이 모든 연구를 통하여 그의 철학이 탈이성적인 단순한 신비의 차원에 한정되는 것이 아니라, 매우 합리적인 철학의 영역 속에서 있었음을 보이고자 한다.
