Jacques Maritain (1882-1973), a well known French neo-Thomist endeavored to show that Thomas Aquinas’ philosophy is a philosophia perennis, that is, a philosophy that always is actual. Among his vast amount of works, Humanisme intégral has received most extensive reactions. The book, among Maritain’s works, tried to show that Thomas’ ideas suggest themselves to the modern world.
Maritain proposed new Christendom as an alternative to various Western regimes in crisis of his epoch such as capitalism, communism, Nazism, and Fascism and characterized it as integral humanism. Christendom refers to the secular communal regime characterized by the Christian concepts about human life. It distinguishes itself from the Medieval Christendom, which viewed secular orders as only a means to the spiritual order, and acknowledges the autonomy of
secular orders. He criticized both the Medieval civilization, which ignored the natural values of human beings, and the modern civilization, which gave rise to inhumanity through anthropocentric humanism, and proposed integral humanism as a new alternative.
This article, concentrating on Humanisme intégral, will see how Maritain applied Thomist philosophy to the problems of the modern world. It will also examine whether he succeeded
in showing the actuality of the Thomism. These questions will lead to evaluation of the actuality of Thomism that Maritain developed utilizing Thomistic principles.
