Since the global warming and the food problem is one of the greatest environmental concerns, the phototrophic ability of microalgae has recently been focused on[1, 2]. Specially Spriulina platensis is not only efficient in photosynthesis but also rich in nutrients[3-5]. To determine the optimal culture conditions for the growth and chlorophyl concentration of the microalgal Spirulina platensis NIES 39 in a batch culture, optimal temperature, initial pH, light intensity and concentration of carbon and nitrogen, were tested. The most favorable temperature conditions for high biomass of 1.58 g/L was 35℃. At initial pH 9.5 and 4500 lux, the excellent yields of 2.10 g/L biomass and 29.53 mg/L chlorophyll concentration, were obtained. But, at higher than pH 10.5, growth rate showed inhibitory effect. Optimal concentration of NaHCO3 and NaNO3 for carbon and nitrogen source were determined 16.8 g/L, 2.5 g/L, respectively. Through the result of this study, optimum culture conditions of Spirulina platensis NIES 39 are determined on temperature, initial pH, light intensity, concentration of NaHCO3 and NaNO3.
