Anticancer effect and cell cytotoxicity of Spirulina maxima was studied. Spirulina maxima
was extracted with three different solvents: 1)EtOH at 80℃, 2)water at 100℃, and 3)ultrasonification in water at 60℃. The yield at each solvent was 10.3%, 19.8%, and 33.46%, respectively. Each extract was applied to HEK293 to investigate the cell cytotoxicity of normal cells. Lower than 26% of cytotoxicity was observed at 1.0 mℓ of each extract in HEK293, and such low value proved that the extracts are harmless for human body. Anticancer activity was investigated with A549, AGS, Hep3B, MCF-7. Over 70% of anticancer activity was observed at 1.0 mg/mℓ of extracts. The extract from ultrasonification in water at 60℃ showed the highest anticancer activity. Selectivity to each cancer cell was in a good range, 1.5 to 4. This study showed that Spirulina maxima may contain many active components for anticancer. Further chemical analysis will confirm that Spirulina maxima is a useful natural ingredient to extract active components for anticancer.
