The purpose of this study is to understand young children's play in a kindergarten attached to an elementary school and determine what their play implies for them.
For this purpose, the following question was raised: How do young children play in a kindergarten attached to an elementary school?
Then, the sub-questions were as follows:
1. How does a teacher affect young children's play?
2. How do rules of a peer group affect young children's play?
3. How does the association between a kindergarten and an elementary school affect young children's play?
For this purpose, a qualitative research was conducted using three methods: participatory observation, videotaping, and practice-outlining.
The results can be summarized as follows: First, young children were significantly affected by teachers in their play by accepting them unconditionally, perceiving them as those who settled a trouble, and recognizing them as targets for modeling. Many behaviors reinforced by teachers were found to encourage young children to internalize rules and temperance rather than to develop their social skills.
Second, young children valued rules of a peer group so much in their play.
They showed a strong tendency of observing rules set by themselves, including helping peers in need of help (those who showed regressive behaviors), setting order by the physical size, modeling, and observing established classroom rules. Young children understood the need of rules and tried to observe the rules while setting and observing them and interacted more actively to observe them.
Third, the association between a kindergarten and an elementary school in young children's play was found to encourage them to imitate elementary school children's desirable behaviors, develop society-friendliness, and form a desirable habit of living. And as a kindergarten attached to an elementary school, which was composed of only five-year-old preschool children, it was found to be more affected by Vygotsky' Zone of Proximal Development than a general private kindergarten.
Young children showed a strong tendency of modeling themselves on elementary school students in terms of desirable behaviors and used such desirable behaviors as a foundation for setting and implementing their own classroom rules.
