It is human being's basic desire for mankind to decorate or ornament part or all of its body. In addition, it is a symbol of social status and expression of aesthetic sense of the times. Floral Hairdressing which means human being's ornament with flowers on head is to express person's personality and aestheticism as well as status by harmonizing flowers with natural flowers or artificial flowers, plant stems, leaves etc. to decorate hair beautifully. Floral Hairdressing shown in the western paintings in the 17th to 19th century was categorized into 3 types and the types are Wreath-Shaped Floral Hairdressing Type, Floral Gathered Hairdressing Type and One Floral Hairdressing. Wreath-Shaped Floral Hairdressing Type is a type linked the longest with natural flowers or artificial flowers or plant stems, leaves. Wreath-Shaped Floral Hairdressing Type as a Floral Hairdressing expresses person's personality and aestheticism as well as status and appears in the historical paintings or myth and allegorical paintings in which a story is the general metaphor. Floral Gathered Hairdressing Type as a Floral Hairdressing is a type which is used for part of hair with natural flowers or artificial flowers or plant stems, leaves. Floral Gathered Hairdressing Type also express person's personality and aestheticism as well as status and was used as a tool to emphasize women's beauty in baroque art of the 17th century and rococo art of the 18th century. Furthermore, there was Floral Gathered Hairdressing Typed Floral Hairdressing which became the subjects of person's personality and paintings in romantic art of the 18th century and impressionistic art of the 19th century. In addition, Floral Gathered Hairdressing Typed Floral Hairdressing which matches women's personality and style of a dress was shown in impressionistic art which draw the upper middle class and society women. One Floral Hairdressing is a type to decorate hair with emphasis on a big flower by using natural flowers or artificial flowers or plant stems, leaves. Small flowers and leaves are used and person's status and aestheticism are expressed. The Floral Hairdressing of One Floral Hairdressing appears in impressionistic as well as rococo and romantic arts ranging from the 18th to the 19th century and implies the emphasis of women's beauty and womanliness. In addition, it expresses women's instinct and willingness to show more beauty of women and their social status. Studying the Floral Hairdressing shown in the western painting works can be considered to be meanings of not only uplift of recognition to history but also much deeper self-reflection about flower culture and art. Therefore, this study through painting works and literatures should be continued.

인류가 자신의 신체 중 일부 혹은 전체를 치장하거나 장식하는 것은 인간의 기본적인 욕구이다. 또한 사회적 신분의 상징이기도 하며, 시대적 미의식의 표현이기도 하다. 두발장식화(頭髮裝飾花)는 인간이 머리에 장식하는 꽃을 일컫는 말로, 생화(生花)나 가화(假花) 또는 식물줄기, 잎 등을 꽃과 함께 조화시켜 두발을 아름답게 치장함으로써 인물의 위상과 더불어 개성과 심미성을 표출한 것을 말한다. 17∼19세기 서양회화에 나타난 두발장식화는 세 가지 형태로 분류하였으며, 그 형태는 꽃줄형, 꽃모음형, 한송이형이다. 꽃줄형은 생화(生花)나 가화(假花) 또는 식물줄기, 잎 등이 가장 길게 연결된 형태이다. 꽃줄형의 두발장식화는 인물의 위상과 더불어 개성과 심미성을 표출하고 있으며, 17세기, 18세기, 19세기의 역사화나 신화 그리고 이야기 전체가 하나의 총제적인 은유인 알레고리화에 등장하고 있다. 꽃모음형은 생화(生花)나 가화(假花) 또는 식물줄기, 잎 등이 두발(頭髮)의 부분에 사용된 형태이다. 꽃모음형 역시 인물의 위상과 더불어 개성과 심미성을 표출하고 있으며, 17세기 바로크와 18세기 로코코미술에서 여성의 아름다움을 부각시키기 위한 도구로써 사용되고 있다. 그리고 18세기 낭만주의미술과 19세기 인상주의 회화에서 인물의 성격과 그림의 주제에 어울리는 꽃모음형 두발장식화가 나타나고 있다. 또한 중․상류층과 사교계 여성들을 주로 그렸던 인상주의 회화에서 여성의 개성과 복식에 어울리는 꽃모음형 두발장식화가 나타나는 것을 볼 수 있다. 한송이형은 생화(生花)나 가화(假花) 또는 식물줄기, 잎 등을 사용하여 두발(頭髮)을 장식하는 것으로 커다란 한 송이의 꽃을 중심으로 하는 형태이다. 작은 꽃과 잎 등을 함께 사용하기도 하며, 인물의 위상과 더불어 개성과 심미성을 표출한 것이다. 한송이형의 두발장식화는 18∼19세기의 로코코와 낭만주의 그리고 인상주의 회화에서 나타나며, 여성의 아름다움이나 여성성을 강조하고자 하는 의미를 내포하고 있다. 또한, 보다 더 아름다워 보이고자 하는 여성의 본능과 의지 그리고 사회적 신분을 나타나고 있다. 서양의 회화작품에 나타난 두발장식화를 연구하는 것은 역사에 대한 인식을 고양시킴과 동시에 꽃 문화와 꽃 예술에 대한 보다 깊이 있는 자기성찰이라는 의미를 가진다고 할 수 있다. 그러므로 회화작품과 문헌을 통한 이와 같은 연구는 지속되어야 할 것이다.
