By evaluating the flower paintings of Japan and Joseon Dynasty, the following flowers were depicted in order of preference; Peony, Japanese Apricot tree, and Chrysanthmum. However out of top 20 ornamental plants appearing in the paintings, 10 shrub kinds for Joseon Dynasty and only 6 kinds for Japan were depicted accordingly indicating the difference in preference. Whilst traditional paintings of Joseon period placed great emphasis on the detailed soft expression or the stiff and formative expression as appeared in The Four Gracious Plants, the folk paintings illustrated natural and real effect which gave a sense of incomplete abstract beauty. Conversely Japanese painting showed elaborate and accurate technique which maximized the use of blank space giving poetic beauty. Nevertheless one can sense that they lack the kinetic and free formative nature of the painting of Joseon Dynasty.

일본과 조선 화조화에 나타난 꽃들을 조사한 결과 모란, 매화 그리고 국화 순으로 많이 등장한 것을 알 수 있었다. 하지만 가장 많이 등장하는 20가지 생물 중, 조선시대 화조화에는 10가지 관목류가, 그리고 일본의 화조화에는 6가지 만에 그치는 것으로 보아, 각국의 다른 취향을 보여준다. 조선의 전통 화조화는 상세한 묘사와 형태를 강조하는 구상을 보인반면, 조선 민화에서는 자연적이고 실질적인 묘사를 통하여 추상적인 아름다음을 표현한다. 일본의 화조화는 이와 다르게 정교하고 정확한 기법을 구사, 공백의 미를 추구하여 시적인 아름다움을 표현한다. 그리하며 조선의 자유분방하고 역동적인 미가 떨어지는 것이 사실이다.
