The purpose of this study was to describe the lives of special school teachers at work. It intended to conduct a participant observation of the teaching activities, guidance and job handling of special school teachers in an attempt to explore the culture of a teacher community in special school. The subjects in this study were three secondary teachers from a selected private special school in Seoul. A participant observation was conducted during a nine-month period of time. The lives of the special school teachers at work were largely categorized into three parts: teaching, guidance and job handling. The category of teaching consisted of 'providing instruction in consideration of individual variances and in a manner to ensure the successful prevention of safety accidents,' 'letting students practice repeatedly even during recess,' and 'instructing how to eat as part of education.' The category of guidance was composed of 'exact awareness/thorough checking' and 'close double-checking,' and that of work handling was characterized by 'utilizing spare time even in a busy life,' 'performing official duties,' and 'wrapping up.' The findings of the study seemed to show the unique characteristics of the culture of the teacher community in special school, which were different from those of general school teacher communities. Given the findings, some suggestions were made for future research on the culture of special school teachers.

본 연구는 특수학교 교사의 교직생활을 중심으로 기술함으로써 특수학교 교사가 수행하는 수업활동, 학교생활지도, 업무가 어떻게 진행되는지 참여관찰을 통해 특수학교 교직문화의 특성을 밝히는데 목적을 갖는다. 이를 위해 서울특별시 사립특수학교 한곳을 선정하여 9개월 동안 중등부 담당교사 3명의 교직생활을 중심으로 참여관찰 하였다. 특수학교 교사의 교직생활은 크게 수업활동, 학교생활지도, 업무로 나누어진다. 수업활동은 ‘개인차 및 안전사고 예방을 고려한 수업하기’, 학교생활지도는 ‘정확히 인식하고 철저히 점검하기’, ‘쉬는 시간에도 반복적으로 연습시키기’, ‘교육의 일환으로 식사지도하기’, ‘꼼꼼히 재확인하기’, 업무는 ‘분주함 속에서도 자투리시간 이용하기’, ‘공적인 일하기’, ‘마무리 작업하기’로 나타났다. 이 연구결과는 일반학교에 나타나는 특성과 다른 특수학교 교직문화의 독특한 특성으로 보인다. 이러한 연구결과를 기초로 하여 특수학교 교직문화에 대한 후속연구를 제시하였다.
