Through the visual messages of Journalistic illustrations, We can face up to reality and share the social experiences. Journalistic illustrations in Korea have close relation with political transitions and as instruments of visual communication, they reflect the social aspects. This research is designed to explore the Korean political history from 1909 to present and the roles of journalistic illustrations in Korea with the stream of times. First of all, theoretical study of journalistic illustration has been essentially considered, and the journalistic illustrations have been divided into six categories in history. According to the Korean political transitions, the roles of Korean journalistic illustrations have been classified ; arousing national consciousness, propaganda of anticommunism ideology, political propaganda and agitation of dictatorial government, a pro-democracy movement and freedom of expression. The influence of journalistic illustrations on the masses also have been considered. Therefore, the purpose of this thesis is to examine how journalistic illustrations reflected political demands and suggest the direction and vision of today's journalistic illustrations in Korea..

저널리스틱 일러스트레이션의 시각적 메시지를 통해 대중들은 현실의 문제들을 직시하게 되며, 사회적 경험을 공유하게 된다. 한국 저널리스틱 일러스트레이션의 변천과정은 정치상황과 긴밀하게 관련되어 있으며 그 시대 사회상을 반영한다는 점에서 많은 것을 시사한다. 본 연구는 한국 저널리스틱 일러스트레이션의 태동기였던 1909년에서 현재까지 100년간의 정치적 변화를 살펴보고, 저널리스틱 일러스트레이션이 이러한 역사적 흐름 속에서 어떠한 역할을 해왔는지에 대해 고찰해보고자 하였다. 먼저, 저널리스틱 일러스트레이션을 이론적으로 고찰해 보고 시기별로 여섯 단계로 구분하여 정리하였다. 이를 한국 정치상황의 변화에 따라 민족의식 고취, 반공이데올로기의 선전, 군사독재정권의 선전선동, 사회저항, 자유로운 사회비판 등의 특징적 역할을 분석하여 한국 저널리스틱 일러스트레이션이 어떻게 대중들에게 영향을 끼쳤는지 살펴보았다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 정치적인 억압과 통제 속에서 표현이 자유롭지 못했던 과거 저널리스틱 일러스트레이션을 고찰해봄으로써 현재를 되돌아보고 앞으로 나가야 할 방향을 모색해 보고자 하였다.
