The issue of leadership in the field of adult education has been discussed on the basis of general leadership theories, such as traits, behavior, contingency, transformational, and ethical leadership. Choi(2006), with a different perspective, provided comprehensive leadership and development frameworks considering the specific characteristics of adult educators and adult education institutions. In addition to his pioneering work, this paper aims to frame the concept of leadership for adult education by using three metaphors for leaders; 1) leader as opportunity taker, 2) leader as manager of present moment, and 3) leader as designer for systemic change. Required mental models for each type of leader were also provided. This article put specific emphasis on the ways that adult education leaders should deal with the complex problems caused by educational value conflicts, different needs from a variety of stakeholders, technological advances, unknown future demands, and so on. As a conclusion, it was indicated that a new perspective for adult education leadership is needed.

최은수(2006)는 성인교육분야에 관한 리더십 논의가 경영학 또는 행정학에서 제시되는 일반적인 리더십 이론에만 치중해 있음을 지적하고 성인교육 학습자 및 교육자, 성인교육기관, 성인교육 프로그램 등의 특수성을 감안한 성인교육 리더십의 프레임웍이 필요함을 적시하였다. 성인교육분야의 발전을 위해 그의 주장은 적절하며 본 논고는 성인교육리더십의 정치한 이론적 바탕을 세우기에 앞서 보다 외연을 넓혀 성인교육 관련 지도자들은 과연 어떠한 리더여야 하는 가를 은유적으로 제시하였다. 세 가지의 리더타입을 논의 하였는데, 1) 기회 창조자로서의 리더, 2) 현재의 순간에 충실한 리더, 3) 시스템 디자이너로서의 리더 등이 그것이다. 특별히 이러한 리더들을 논의한 이유는 현재 성인교육 관련 지도자들이 겪고 있는 외부 환경의 빠른 변화와 넘치는 요구에 대응해야 하면서도 내적으로 조직을 관리하고 질적으로 우수한 성인교육 프로그램을 유지해야하는 긴장관계에서 필요하게 되는 리더의 역할에 초점을 맞추었기 때문이다. 리더의 세 가지 타입에 필요한 사고모델도 제시되었는데, 기회창조자로서는 기회사고와 구조사고가, 현재에 충실한 리더로서는 mindfulness가, 시스템 디자이너로서의 리더에는 시스템 사고와 디자인 사고가 필요함이 논의 되었다. 결론적으로 도덕적 딜레마와 조직 내외적 갈등을 넘어서는 데에는 성인교육 관련 지도자의 교육적 비전을 향한 새로운 시각이 중요함이 강조되었다.
