Contextual Meanings of Sino-Korean Vocabulary Used in English-into-Korean Translations of a Normative Text: With a Focus on the Translation of Code of Conduct for English Judges
초록
영어
In translating ‘normative’ texts from English into Korean, many translation students― including those who spent their regular school years in Korea during much of their lifetime―tend to have difficulties in choosing Sino-Korean vocabulary appropriate to the context given. Of course there are also problems related to their ignorance of and insensitivity to the discourse conventions of original Korean texts of comparable genre. However, given that problems of this kind can be fixed with relative ease, the translation difficulties occurring in connection with the inherent lexical vagueness of Sino-Korean words warrant more attention from both translation scholars and translation teachers. The purpose of this article, therefore, is to show some chosen examples of context-dependent Sino-Korean vocabulary, or those ‘connotative traps’ in which students get caught frequently, and lay an emphasis on what translation teachers of this genre and this translation direction have to be prepared to deal with in the classroom.
