A Study of the Translations of “The Tale of Genji” in Korea.
초록
영어
This paper reviews the Korean translations of “The Tale of Genji”, and examines the present state of research and questions that arise. “The Tale of Genji” was translated into Korean for the first time in 1975 by Liu Zheng. In 1999, after the first translation by Liu went out of print, a second translation was completed by Cheon Yong-shin. Another complete translation was published by Kim Nan-joo under the supervision of Kim Yoo-cheon in 2007, and a translation of excerpts was published by Kim Jong-duck in 2008. These complete translation works were made from and based upon the modern versions of the Tale by, Yosano Akiko, Setouchi Jakucho, or found in Shogakkan's Complete Works. This paper asks some general questions about these three translations by comparing and contrasting them with the original text, and identifies the cases of and problems in each translation of proper nouns, Wakas, Hikiutas, Sosijis, as well as omissions and mistranslations.
