At the dawn of the 21st century, ‘sustainability’has been widely used in society overall. Especially, as the global warming has become reality, governments, industries and societies alike are calling for sustainability or eco-friendliness. Universities can’t be exceptions. As the highest education institutions in society, universities should provide a vision as well as play a leading role in sustainability. Then, have universities suggested a clear direction toward sustainability so far? This study will look at various cases, domestic and overseas and idenfity the key agenda for sustainable growth. Also, the study will identifiy what should be improved from the current status. As a conclusion, the study will include a recommendation on on-going or to-be eco-campus projects in terms of design direction and long-term development models. After comparing the various cases in Korea with overseas, it is apparent that the eco campus projects are limited by universities’ financial capability, small land size, high density issues and short-term project duration. These conditions often result in short-sighted and single phased plans. On the other hand, the cases in developed countries are approached with long-term visions, well-developed plans, and fundamental solutions aligned with local communities, which lead to meet all the necessary components of the eco campus. In the education side, the programs are co-developed with eco education, which consequently promotes volunteerism among all the stakeholders. When combined all together, the success is made possible with active participation. In this study, based upon the analysis and its results, the current issues and directions, improvement areas for the on-going or to-be eco campus projects and long-term development plans will be explored.

21세기 들어 사회 전반에 지속가능이라는 주제가 유행어처럼 사용되고 있다. 특히, 지구 온난화의 폐해가 사실로 다가오면서 정부, 민간, 기업 할 것 없이 모두가 지속가능 또는 환경 친화를 부르짖고 있는 형편이다. 대학도 여기에 예외일 수는 없다. 대학은 한 사회의 미래를 책임지고 있는 고등 교육 기관으로서, 그리고 사회의 선도적 역할을 해야 한다는 본연의 임무를 다하기 위해서라도 지속가능에 대한 방향을 제시해야 한다. 과연, 그렇다면 대학이 지속가능 발전의 방향타 역할을 하고 있는가? 본 연구에서는 국내외 사례를 비교 분석함으로써, 대학이 지속가능 발전하기 위한 과제가 무엇인가를 확인해 보고자 했다. 특히, 국내외 사례 비교분석 결과 국내 대학에 현재 활발히 일어나고 있는 에코 캠퍼스 운동은 학교 재정문제, 토지의 협소성, 고밀도, 단기간에 가시화 되어야 한다는 조건들로 인해 근시안적이고 단편적인 계획에 그치고 있는 경우가 많았다. 반면에 선진국의 사례에서는 장기적인 비전과 치밀한 계획, 지역 사회와 연계한 근원적 해결책을 찾으려고 했기에 에코 캠퍼스의 요소들을 대부분 충족할 수 있었다. 또한 학생들의 친환경 교육과 연계하여 자발적인 참여를 유도하는 캠퍼스 내 풍토 정착은 지속가능한 캠퍼스의 성공을 이끌 수 있었던 중요한 요인이었다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 분석 결과를 토대로 현재의 문제점, 방향성, 현재 계획 중이거나 미래에 추진될 지속가능한 캠퍼스의 디자인 개선 방향 및 장기적인 발전 모델을 확인하고자 한다.
