This study examined online teaching through in-depth interviews with adult learners engaged in online courses in order to provide practical and detailed suggestions on effective teaching methods based on the learners’ experiences. The study categorized the findings into five domains of quality teaching, which include the provision of horizontal relationship, flexible and dynamic administration, authentic approach, presence and social support. It also found many commonalities among the principles of teaching adults and online teaching, regarding relational, authenticity-based and learner-centered aspects. Based on these commonalities and the expectations from the adults as being adult, suggestions are made concerning how to administer adult online courses with the necessary flexibility and affective interaction and how to make best use of multimedia for building a learning community.

본 논문은 온라인 강좌에 수강중인 성인학습자들과의 심층 면접을 통해 효과적인 온라인 교수에 대해 알아봄으로서 학습자들의 온라인 학습경험에 기반하여 실용적이고 구체적인 제안을 제공하고자 하였다. 그 결과 온라인 성인학습자들은 교수자들에게 수평적인 관계에 대한 기대를 가지고 학습운영에 있어서 보다 유연적으로 대처하면서 실재감을 보여주기를 바라고 있었다. 또한 내용 접근면에서 실천적인 측면을 강조하고 사회적 지원을 아끼지 않는 교수를 강조하였다. 이를 기반으로 하여 본 연구는 성인들을 대상으로 하는 교수 원리와 온라인 교수 원리간에 관계적, 실천적, 그리고 학습자 중심적인 면 등에서 공통점이 있음을 발견하였으며, 이러한 공통점과 성인으로서 성인학습자들이 가지는 기대에 기초하여 성인들 대상의 온라인 강좌의 효과적인 운영에 대한 제안을 제시하였다. 이러한 제안들에는 충분한 유연성과 정서적인 상호작용, 그리고 학습 공동체를 형성하기 위한 효과적인 미디어 사용에 대한 제안 등이 포함되어 있다.
