The purpose of this study is to account for the English-Korean translation patterns for English relative clauses. There are some significant differences between English and Korean modification structures. The most important difference is that Korean does not allow the postmodifiers like relative clauses in English. Hence we could expect that the English relative clauses will be translated into premodifiers or any other paratactic structures in Korean. We analyse the corresponding patterns of translation of relative clauses in English-Korean translated texts. We also try to explain the specific translation patterns for restrictive vs. non-restrictive relative clauses in terms of sign-oriented vs. sense-oriented translation. Both types of relative clauses in the translated texts mainly follow the sense-oriented translation, while non-restrictive relative clauses are relatively more inclined to follow the sign-oriented translation procedures.
