In view of the importance of congregational hymns in Christian worship in the trends of inculturation of church music, the writer is of the opinion that the Korean Church needs the inculturation of church music for a new revival in the era of new millennium. To achieve this objective, the writer would like to observe how the early Korean hymnals were adapted by American missionaries in this article. That is, the writer will examine the kinds of hymns and the number of many Western hymns that were included in the early Protestant hymnals of Korea, such as Chanyangka, Chanmika, and Chansungsi, and which were published and in active circulation among the church at the end of nineteenth century. The revision of hymnbooks and the translation of Western hymns are necessary starting points in the process of adaptation which is a primary stage towards the inculturation of Korean hymnody. According to Anscar Chupungco, adaptation means that one culture colonizes and dominates another culture and its contexts without any communication or respect. However, even if adaptation carries a negative meaning or implication in the field of inculturation, adaptation is an initial approach in the process of inculturation. Thus, in this article, the primary stages of inculturation, such as revision and translation that are the necessary procedures and steps toward adaptation, are investigated and discussed.

오늘날 기독교예배에서 차지하는 회중찬송의 중요성에 비추어 한국교회는 21세기의 새로운 부흥을 위해 교회음악의 토착화가 절실히 요구되는 시점이다. 이와 관련하여 이 글은 초기 한국찬송가가 어떻게 외국선교사에 의해 적용화 되었는지를 조사하고자 한다. 특히 19세기 말에 출판되어 광범위하게 사용되었던 대표적인 초기 개신교 찬송가인, 찬양가, 찬미가, 찬셩시를 중심으로 구체적인 찬송의 종류와 적용화 작업을 살펴보기로 한다. 한국찬송가의 토착화를 위한 초기단계로서의 적용화 과정에서는 주로 서양찬송이 번역되고 만들어졌는데, 앤스카 추풍코에 의하면 적용화는 하나의 문화가 다른 문화를, 일말의 존경이나 대화 없이 식민지화하여 지배하는 것을 의미한다. 비록 이와 같이 적용화가 부정적인 측면을 가지고 있다 할지라도 한 문화의 토착화 진행과정에서 볼 때 필요한 과정이라고 할 수 있다. 그래서 이 글에서는 한국초기 찬송가에 나타난 토착화의 초기 단계인 개정과 번역을 통한 적용화 과정을 조사해본다.
